Started car up today and heard a bad whining noise after idling for 10 seconds or so. Yesterday I rebuilt the PS pump and thought maybe that was the culprit. I removed all 3 belts and still hear the noise. The noise continues and gradually fades away after shutting the car off. It is louder underneath the car back where the transmission and motor meet. I took a video of it. Any input would be appreciated.

The motor has been fully built and only has 1500 miles on. Thanks!

did you do the clutch recently or dropped the transmission? if so it could be the pilot bearing

When I rebuilt the motor we put a SPEC stage 3 in. I wouldn't think a bad pilot bearing would make noise a couple seconds after the engine stopped spinning???

Yes it does, the sound doesn't get louder with RPM.

Its been fine for 1500 miles. Just started it today and the noise is there. I don't think it can be something internal or something that 'spins' when the motor is on. Since the sound doesn't happen right when the motor is started and it doesn't go away right when the motor is turned off. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but i've never heard this before.

Possibly the clutch release bearing...

I don't know if you run a PCV system, but here's a similar noise from a defective PCV:

aka throw-out bearing? The sound doesn't change when the clutch pedal is depressed either. Does that spin for a few seconds after the car is turned off?

I figure inertia will turn an engine over for a brief moment after shutting it off. Anyways, I ran into this:

zerothread/308180

This guy's 240 with a Spec Stage 3 clutch makes a grinding noise when he presses the clutch pedal.

Try adjusting more freeplay into your clutch pedal to see if you guys have the same issue.

Thanks for the replies.....

Yeah I would think inertia would turn the engine a couple revolutions after the key is off, but this noise is still there after the key is turned off and lasts for 3-4 seconds once the engine has stopped turning and the sound slowly fades away.

Turbo bearings? Sounds like turbo to me since it stops spinning after engine shuts off

It's much much louder underneath the car. We're just gonna yank the transmission and check the input shaft and throwout bearings.

Thanks! Listened to those 2 videos and thats exactly what it sounds like. Checked the PCV system and had a problem with the catchcan line. All good to go now.
