After looking and "saving" for the past 2 years, I think I may have found the best(cheap) 240. It's a 90 hatch w/ 5 spd for 1400. And I'm confident I could knock off some more.

I have some money saved, but not enough, and I was asking for a little loan to get it, and repay. But noooo. "You're not buying some high performance car" and "You've got a perfectly good car as it is" Is what I heard.

That perfectly good car is a 95' pink (yes that's right a pinkish purple hue) Cavalier with 236,xxx miles

I need some help on this argument. Help a brotha out

either save up some more when you have enough money, and forget about the loan. or talk to the person selling the car on doing a payment. when you're ready financially, just buy the car, bring it home, they'll begin to accept it. :)

somebody had a thread about this a little while ago. have your parents drive the car and they will realize it is far from a high-performance sports car from the factory. it has gobs of potential but stock its a slug. save up some money or try getting your friends to throw you some cash if you pay them interest. or, get a job ;]

Are you under a time constraint? If you need a car now, then I'd say look for more problems with the 90 and try to bring it down or talk to the seller and tell him/her your situation. If they're willing to take a hit in the price a little more, then it'll work to your favor. If you don't need a car now and now, I'd say save more and when you've found another jump on that one. But do remember that most used cars aren't in perfect condition so you might want to keep a couple hundred on the side as a buffer for "in case $hit". I bought my 89 at an inflated price of 2100 because I just wanted the car, and so far I've put quite a bit in repairing parts that needed them because of age. After all it is over 10 years old now.

I gotta wonder how old you are. If you are still a minor, then ultimately it is their decision. once you hit 18, do what you want. But look to noone else but yourself. It's always nice if you can get help, but from my life experiences, I choose not to put myself in a position where I have to rely on others.

what worked for me was "Its not like having a fast car will MAKE me speed, almost any car on the road can do 100+ mph, its up to ME how fast it goes." which is the truth. --actually, that was my turbo argument, which i won, but that should definately work.

But thats only if you cant convince your parents that it isnt a fast car, because it isnt, stock.

Yeah I wanna know how old you are as well. If you're 16 or 17 (or even 18 really...), I seriously would back off on calling your parents ignorant if I were you. Young people always roll their eyes when parents tell them that such and such (like a 240) is a dangerous thing to have, but it REALLY IS true. I dont know how many times I scraped by huge accidents in my father's saturn when I first started driving, but it was a LOT, and I was more careful than a lot of my friends. You really do need to learn how to drive WELL first, then get the car of your dreams.

If you're over 18 or whatever then disregard what I said, but even still you need to think about the real capabilites of this car... it is *not* a slug... it's not a racecar, no, but it's a HELL of a lot faster than that cav you've got.

Maybe consider taking the car on only as a "project car?" dont register it just yet... if you have the space and the money (although it doesnt seem like you do...), maybe you could buy one and just learn abuot it mechanically first-- that would be a start...

Also remind your parents that 240's have very good safety ratings, even the ones without airbags(s13's).. and that they're easy to maintain. (unlike your cavy i'm sure)

what it comes down to is if your parents trust you behind the wheel of any automobile, (which they must, if you want to call a cavalier an automobile). I wouldnt buy one of my kids a rwd car if he was a knuckle-headed reckless 16 year old.

it IS a great car, much more so than that 236,xxx mile miracle of american disappointment you drive right now. no offense?

Even though cavaliers are on the bottom rung of compact cars, I like them for sentimental value. I think cavaliers truly sparked my interest in cars. Not to mention I kept the same username that I had when I frequented j-body.org

:) and 236k on a cavalier is a miracle :)

Well I'm almost 18 fyi. That Cav is on it's second engine and the transmission doesn't like going in reverse and has trouble catching in first. One time I was parked in a lot that was completely flat, put into reverse to back up, hit the gas and nothing happened. I could have sat there all day and revved the crap out it an nothing happened. Even After I put it into drive and moved forward a couple inches. I had to put it into neutral and push it backwards out of the spot. That car ain't that great.

Plus if you think picking up girls in a beater is hard, try it in this color of a car. I might as well change my name to Elton John.

And I'm not on a time restraint, but I've been looking, saving, talking, for almost 2 years. Meanwhile I've seen tons and tons of my friends either get the car they want off the bat, or shortly after they start driving, they get the car they want. ITR, 240, Lancer, Camaro, several hatches, etc..And now I've found one that looks pretty good, and only has 129,xxx miles.

BTW I am very mechanically inclined. I've lost track of how many friends I've helped work on their car and/or explained pretty much anything you can think of to them. (They're all morons, yet they all drive much faster cars than a 240.) And I plan on getting an Automotive technology degree when I graduate high school.

sorry for the long post, but maybe you understand my situation better

Explain to your parents that the 240sx:

1- is not a sport car (in stock form ;) )2- is extremely reliable3- seats 4 people4- has cheap insurance5- isnt ugly

I guarentee that your parents have already spent more money repairing that shiat box than a 240sx costs.

Other side

Doesn't mean I don't think you should have or could handle a 240, just there are 2 sides to every issue.

yeah, second engine, rebuilt transmission, battery exploding(yes exploded, during start up, I thought I got shot at, the bang was so loud) plus several other things. But no.

Oh this is my favorite quote so far--

"It's like a lawn mower, if it's a 4 cylinder"

Ummm, wait a minute isn't that Cavalier a 4 cylinder? (pops hood) OMG it is!

Admittedly, the fact that it LOOKS fast and can BE fast make for a solid arguement. It's easy to get caught up in the speed hype surrounding imports and do something DUMB in the car.

AND

To your parents' credit, your Cavalier does get you where you need to be. My recommendation is that you drive the Cav as long as you can stand (or it can stand, whichever comes first) save up and get yourself a solid 240sx. Don't cheapen your car by settling for something that will need hundreds if not thousands of dollars of work to get it where you want.

EDIT: By"where you want" I mean reliable. Not tricked out. Just a solid 240.

If that doesn't work, nothing will...

You could get your parents to ride with you in the cav, and do 100+ to prove your point...

Mention the fuel cut-off at 120mph

fact that its a slow car, only 0-60 in 9-ish seconds

WAIT

I got it! Tell your parents that people at school call you gay because of the color of your car... Get really emtional, and tell them it has made your life a living hell. And, the only cure is a 1990 Nissan 240sx Fastback... :D

I wish mine was 120 a month. Im 19 insure both my cars on my dads plan(Dad driving a dakota r/t,C4 vette) and its a little over 200 a month. Only ticket I got was a parking ticket when I was 16. My EG is only 85 though. Man that car is awesome Great on gas and cheap to drive and mod!! Btw you should have seen what the insurance was on my 89 240 on my own plan and one car!! Man im glad my dad let me on his plan. Even though he does drive a vette.

Oh dude, that has already happened and still does. I actually got called into the counselors office because teachers had been hearing me getting made fun of wanted to make sure I was alright or something. People had been writing "FAG" in the dirt on my car too.

The sad part was I had been telling my mom this for about 8 months, and she didn't believe me! Can you believe that? She actually said "I don't believe that"!!!!! If the school hadn't found out and called her to tell her what was going on I think she still wouldn't believe me.

Have I mentioned that talking to her is like talking to a brick wall?

The worst part is, is that my dad is totally for it, and we've been wanting to get a 240 and make it a project car for a while, but I don't live with him(he lives 3 hours away) and he's completely broke.

Man those quotes still sound high to meI'm 20 and have 2 tickets on my record. I have full coverage on my 240 and liability on a 96 suburban, and mine is only 70 a month.

you think parents are bad? wait till you get married. I've got friends who have to beg and beg to get mods for their cars...

just a hint for the future.... make sure she likes em too...

I got lucky, The only sacrifice I had to make is that my wife drives the 97 and i get the 95 ;)
