Don't sugar coat it, man. tell us what you really think.... :chuckle: j/k

I agree that there are better choices than a Focus as a DD, but to be fair, Ford has improved them since they broke the record for most US government issued recalls for a single model.

That's also a hand built SVT model I recommended, not a normal Focus. I wouldn't buy a normal Focus either. But there isn't a lot of normal Focus in that car. The engine was redesigned by SVT and gets over 200hp, the transaxle was built by ALLISON. It's really not a focus.

I know i had an SVT focus for a number of years. They make less than 200hp, dyoned at 154hp when i took it in. The was so many things wrong with the way they did that car, everything from the dual intake lever right down to the crappy rusty control arm bolts that seize if you breathe on them wrong. The only nice thing about it was the GETRAG trans which was shared with the 1st gen mini cooper s.

Hmm... Interesting.
I hadn't really thought about it, but ford does have a reputation for making lemons.
I mean, my dad's 07 exploder is... not the most reliable car we own. And it's the newest (in terms of model year)

5th gen Honda Prelude, Civic Si, Acura RSX/Integra.
All super simple, dead nuts reliable, fun to drive, good gas mileage. They also have that elusive storage space you're looking for.

They all have much less power and torque than a maxima. I also guess that since these cars are smaller there's less space.
I think at this point i've pretty much decided to get an 5th gen maxima. I'm starting to fall for that car. And the VQ is an awesome motor.
Guess I'm going Nissan.

^Out of the three used vehicles I've owned.....
I've never test driven any of them.
But If any of the cars drive like my torneo (japanese accord) which was gutless, and dull. Couldn't break traction in the rain, and is the complete opposite of inspiring and fun to drive.

I have no motivation or will to own it.

Though I will admit the RSX looks like it could be a needle in the haystack.

My rsx was a fun car to own. Too bad you won't convince your mom it isn't a "sporty" car. Also, the state of the RSX market is now so terrible it's not even funny. Every fool with a type S approaching 150K thinks 7 to 8 grand is a fair asking price. It's not.

Sorry, first reaction looking at that ill-fitting front end.... :barf: ,

If you're looking for a DD in Florida, broken (or removed) A/C and an oil leak should be giant warning signs. You also can't open the doors from the outside without buying/installing a door opening kit. Think about it, if the issues were minor, you would think the seller would have addressed them.

I'm another Maxima supporter. They're just too great a blend of durability, dependability, fun, and practicality to turn down. They really don't do anything poorly but they excel at a great many things. They're great daily drivers, but they're fun to drive and you can get your hoon on if you want. They're not only dependable but very easy to work on (aside from having to remove the damn plenum to replace the rear spark plugs). Parts are cheap and easy to find--especially since there are tons of good-condition examples in every junkyard. Their trunks are enormous due. Back seats have plenty of room for actual adults. You just can't lose with a Maxima unless you completely despise FWD.

Don't buy an Explorer. Later models are so sub-par. They started off as great trucks, and then Ford compromised them more with each redesign. Newer ones are too big, have IRS all around, and have crummy powerplant options. The Cologne 4 liter gets ATROCIOUS fuel economy and makes anemic power. The 4.6 V8 ALSO gets atrocious fuel economy but lacks low-end torque. If Ford had kept the Exploder Ranger-based, it would have remained a very desirable little truck. But they were so busy molding it into a soccermom carrier that it lost its way. It had a ladder-frame but wasn't very good offroad. It had a V6 but wasn't economical. It seated 7 but the back seat is a PITA to get in and out of. It's just not a good truck. I looked at them very seriously before picking up my LS8 and just was not impressed. I'd get an Expedition or Navigator long before an Explorer. Comparable fuel economy, comparable offroad capabilities, but much they're much roomier and nicer to drive.

Pathfinder is a FAR better truck than the Exploder. As is the Trailblazer, with a equivalent offroad capabilities and VASTLY superior onroad manners and much, much, much, MUCH nicer powertrain options.

Rated bhp =/= measured wheel horsepower. 15-20 losses over rated bhp are to be expected.

That said, I wouldn't buy a used SVT focus, either. It's a TEN YEAR OLD econocar. It's not going to be dependable, comfortable, or anything except boyracer. So if the latter is all you need, go for it, buy cheap fun. But if you want a CAR...buy something that's not a heavily-used bargain offering.

So to revive this old thread, I've gotten some quotes for insurance, and since I haven't held a U.S. License for more than 12 months, I am recieving the rough sandpaperyanalraping end of the stick.

Checked with progressive, allstate, esurance, and gieco. the average rate was around 1k+ for 6mo.

I've managed to find 3 possibile cars in the 800 range ( doesn't seem like the range will go lower anytime soon)

Hatchback civic,
VW GTI
and a Jeep wrangler which is surprising considering the engine size.

My pro's and cons of each

Hatchback civic
Pro's
fuel costs will be low
maintenance will be low
can fit a decent amount of stuff in the hatch,
opportunity for DIY is high.

cons
I'm a male who's under 25 driving a hatch back civic, probs gonna end up with harassment from guys in civic's/240 (this is my assumption)
becomes a target for theft,

VW GTI
Pros
Turbo + civic pro's

cons
unsure about parts in terms of $$

Jeep pros
4wd
soft top
decent space
won't get stuck in flood water
can get off road

cons
fuel
a/c not standard in many older models.
larger tires = more $$

I can;t imagine those are the only 3 vehicles in that insurance cost range, But if those are your only choices, the civic Hatchback is a clear winner for a dd.

The Wrangler has a bad reputation for reliability, has a jarring ride, making it awful for long trips. It also has the worst gas mileage, and since in you're in Florida, AWD is pretty much a waste. And if you're worried about theft, it's the only one with a soft top.

The Golf Gti is not a bad performer, gets decent mileage with average reliability. The main downside to them is that like most modern VW's, they're designed to keep you a slave to the dealer.

The civic tops the reliability list, easier to fix, gets the best gas mileage, slowest depreciation, and nice to drive. And if you're worried about what some kids in fart-canned 240sx's think, you should turn in your mancard. Jus sayin.

You don't want a Wrangler for a DD. They're uncomfortable and rattly, and fuel economy is crap. People who buy them as DDs are tards. They're supposed to be a recreational vehicle. A second car.

I wouldn't get the GTI, either. Sure, they're fun, but I'd never want to OWN one. Especially not as my a DD.

Civic won't let you down. Go with that.

They're not the only three, but they're the three i could think of to get a quote on.

I also got a quote on the miata, and it's in the exact same range, but the issue is the convertible top.

I swear almost everyone in Florida has a soft top. I've only ever seen one miata on CL with a hard top.

And I can't even find it anymore.

You guys are really amazing. :dblthumb:

Now to do some more searching for the perfect DD.

Hopefully this thread can be helpful to someone in the future.

But then again who searches for threads anymore
