I was trying to replace my rear main seal last night and when i put it in, the top portion of the seal went further in while the bottom i was able to make flush with the engine block. Is it suppose to go in all the way? or sit flush to the block?

there's nothing behind the seal to keep it from going further in. It should be flush with the carrier's face.

Well I thought so too, but apparently it does go further. But slightly, maybe like 1/32" to 1/64" deep. And I know its the right seal because I verified it with nissan FAST.

I reread my post an I was unclear. There's nothing to prevent it from going further in. Open space.

You just have to use a drift that allows you to stop when it hits flush. I prefer a block of wood.

But since its already in too far, does mean I have to get a new one? Becuase pulling that sucker out was VERY hard and I ripped the old one badly.

If you can get it out unscratched, you could reuse it. It could just be amatter of getting a tool in there and popping it back to flush
