Just bought 1990 300zx auto non turbo
car does not go past 45, someone told me it might be the mass airflow sensor? or to clean the throttle,

Should I be doing this on my own? I am pretty handy can do breaks, oil changes, ect but need help

Yeah, something is starving. Run an ecu test first. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/nissan ... ostic.html

Cleaning the MAF sensor is not a bad idea. It's pretty easy to clean. You can get a can of MAF cleaner at any parts store.

Here is the FSM for disassembly http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/300zx/

After checking for error codes, testing fuel pressure coming out of the fuel filter is a good idea. Should be around 43psi.

Like ziggy said, if it won't go past 45 its starving for either air or fuel.

And to clean the throttle bodies you just remove them (4 bolts each) and spray carb cleaner all over the inside to get rid of any carbon deposits/grime.

Gonna move this to tech. That's where technical questions should go, for future reference.

no have not checked the ECU. Had the compression test done and found out that one of the coil packs were bad. Had the spark plugs changed at the same time ($311). Now running on all six! But having a new jerking issue. Can't explain but like a slow jerking when let go of gas to slow/stop. Sort of downshifting keep in mind it's Automatic. Did not notice that before. The intake pipes are taped together (was like that when I got it) don't know if that what's causing the issues. Changing those out NEXT.

Go ahead and fix the intake pipes and see if it helps. Do the rpms bounce around some when the car is idling? The jerking could be a bad TPS

loosen the 2 mounting bolts and adjust, don't forget to tighten it when you're done.

Looks like it was the TPS . What else does it control?

It just tells the ECU where the throttle is, so that when more throttle is applied, more fuel will be injected. So, basically the ECU bases everything off the MAF and TPS readings. It doesn't control alot, but it is fairly important :gapteeth:

OK the car is coming along good :dblthumb: ....

few more Q's

STATER- it does start up but it's a sharp starting noise and at time takes a few cranks. Sounds like the starter is going... any tips appreciated

RACK AND PINION- Loosing power steering fluid easy diagnose rack and pinion is leaking, question is should I get it rebuild or better new :gotme ? allot of $$$ either way.

SHIFTER-There is a release press needle along the automatic shifter, i'm guess the cap is missing on it and i have to use a screw driver to shift from drive. Is that normal or should it shift once you apply breaks? is there diagram on the shifter?

Steering Wheel- Honk does not work, not sure if it the SW or something else but the SW is not in great shape. Is it suitable to but a SW from a 93 if it a airbag into a 90? What else can I check to get the horn working? :gotme

RADIO, any instructions on installing a radio? i guess it was stolen just before i bought it, missing the face of the detachable

You sure it is the rack and pinion? On mine, it was the J hose leaking just because it was so old and brittle.

You need to inspect the teeth on it and the flywheel

List the nut! Looks like its on the bottom where the screw goes. Tried a bigger size but didn't fit. This is annoying. Any way to get this fixed. Starter won't stay in place as bottom screw falls off, hole is stripped. Bigger size screw doesnt fit thought the starter.

Heli-coil, works magic. Yes, it will be strong enough to hold, have done it myself due to a stripped hole, and not too expensive.

Yeah any parts place should sell heli-coils. I think they sell them based on the size of the hole.

Well the lose starter killed the flywheel, the teeth are messed up on the fly. Having the flywheel changed looking to go ahead n do the transmission oil change. Question is is it ok to use transmission oil from auto part store or just from dealer only?

As long as the weight is right, you're good. But remember how much time/money it's costing you to drop th etranny... And don't go cheapest on the fluid
