What up bishes!?! So, I've decided its time to get the kouki up and running. Well, its more like I have the funds finally to do so. The motor is at my engine builders as we speak; doing a forged bottom end and maybe a reworked head, arp stuffs all around, etc., you guys know the deal.

So here's my problem, my cars been sitting for exactly 5 years now! :ohno: Greg and other people who have worked on cars that have been sitting, what should I replace besides the obvious. I'm gonna need new tires, brakes, maybe suspension, new battery, miscellaneous hoses, a new fuel pump, drop the gas tank and have it checked out, possibly buy a new one, all new fluids...I need help figure this out to get my baby running.

So new with me, I finally got a job after being unemployed for 2 years. I got a job as a porter for my local Harley Davidson dealership back in march but as of 2 weeks ago I was offered the service writer position which after finding out how much it pays I said yes on the spot, needless to say, it pays quite well. Its the reason why I want to get my car fixed, I just spent 1500 on my bike to make it feel brand new and I wanna do the same to the kouki...but then I'm gonna think long and hard about selling it, I kind of want that 2013 boss 302 Laguna seca mustang :naughty:

Yea, so hello, again, I less than 3 nico! Help a brother out.

Sup homey!

I wouldn't sweat the suspension, or the fuel tank... Unless you needed suspension work before parking it, it's probably fine unless it's been sitting out in the Chicago weather.

Drain the fuel tank and let it air out for a day or two. Pull the fuel lines and blow the fuel out, and fill with fresh fuel. Change plugs, and before you do, squirt some oil down in each cylinder. Check your hoses, but I wouldn't go crazy on those either unless they're visibly bad. Change the oil, flush the coolant, and change the trans fluid, diff fluid, brake fluid and clutch fluid, and replace the fuel filter and thermostat.

Pull the coil wire and crank her over - a lot - before starting it for the first time. Make sure you're getting oil pressure.

Plan on doing Seafoam treatment once she's running, and then do another oil change.

Tires and battery are a no-brainer. Make sure there's no rodents living under the dash or in the trunk...

EDIT: Disregard engine stuff, I just saw that it's getting rebuilt.

FBI...

I'm suggesting that you change that to Japanese bike. Some people here may not realize, but Jap is considered to be a derogatory and offensive word and don't like it...especially me.

I'm asking nicely that you change it.

I always just considered it to be short for "Japanese", like a lot of countries refer to Americans as "Amis".

I heard Ami a lot in Europe... kinda like we call the Germans "krauts", they call us "Scheisse Amis". Its all in good fun over there though.
I don't recall there being a short version for "Japanese" while I was over there though. I don't even think I ever heard the equivalent of "Japanese"... its usually just "Aus Japan" or "from Japan".

Jap was a derogatory term used during WWII. It's a term that I don't like, especially since my wife is Japanese. Over here, we're not called Amis. We're called either Americans or Gaijin. SInce it wasn't changed, I'll change it for him.

I understand it's history but how is the first 3 letters of someones nationality "derogatory"?

Yes, it is. The letters used are irrelevant, it's the context. "Jap" was used in the same vein as "nip," Also an abbreviation of another word "Nippon," but equally hateful.

By contrast, as Neal indicated, us pasty white boys and anyone else who is not FULL blood Japanese can be expected to be called "Gaijin." I don't like that either. Similarly it's a shortened version of a word "Gaikokujin." The full word is not deragatory and just indicates you are from another country. The shortened version grew from a hateful place and thus even when used in ignorance by someone not meaning to offend, it does. It basically identifies you not for what you are, but what you aren't. Essentially You are not American, or German, or whatever country you are from you are just not Japanese and get lumped in.

My wife is not a "Jap," she is Japanese, Okinawan more specifically; they aren't even ethnically the same and her people died in more numbers than either the American soldiers or the "Jap" soldiers. Words have meaning and it's not what you intend, it's what is received an a negative word like that always has the potential for harm.

It was definitely used for derogatory purposes, including more recently than WWII.

Pretty much the same way "Paki" was used in the UK some years ago (i.e., not history before our births, btw :)) to denigrate Pakistani immigrants living there.

I am a big believer in the fact that words don't have any power, but it's people who give them power.

I don't think the word Jap is offensive but it's more about how it is used than the word itself. And even then using the full word, Japanese, in a nasty way could still be offensive. Life is too short to worry about silly words is all.

I always believed that racism is taught, and now they know. Gotta pick your battles, I guess. :gotme
The memory of how the word was used is racist, the intention of the word here is not. It's not like the word has one single intention like the n-word.

Quite the tangent we've taken in this thread.

While I might agree with you that the word itself shouldn't be offensive unless used with bad intention... that doesn't matter. The fact is, some people are sensitive to the word and find it offensive no matter how it's used or what the intention is. SO.. a reasonable and respectful person would avoid the use of the word knowing that it might be offensive to someone else..

Let's get this straight from here on out.. Using the word Jap or Paki should be avoided on NICO because it is offensive to some of our members. It doesn't matter what your intention is. If you are aware that it could offend some people, then you should be respectful and adult and not use it.

Thanks!
