I purchased a 2006 M35x a couple of months ago and posted a question concerning the cooled seats, as they really don't do a lot. I figured it was because the foam in the seats were getting old and the holes were collapsing. Now, I can't figure out why the heated seats takes forever to heat up and even then they don't really heat that well. I have had many other cars with factory heated seats and even some aftermarket heated seats and they ALL worked 10 times better that these.

Question: Aren't the heated seats, just electric carbon fiber pads that lay between the seat foam and the seat cover like other heated seats? Can they be replaced by aftermarket systems that would use the factory switches?

Thanks

Steve

No, ours are air.

Turn off your central air and leave the heat/cooling on and you'll hear it.

The technology has improved over the years. It's not bad for 2006.
I read that changing the filters helped, I might try that this winter.

My heated seats are fine. My cooled seats seem to be a little lacking, but they still work enough where my a** isn't sweating. They just seemed to cool even more when I first got the car.

So you are saying they are using air not electric wire pads? Are they just picking the heated air from the heater that goes under the seat and assists it with a fan to push it through the seat? If that is what they are doing, their design sucks!! You are reusing heat that has been in the car cooling off already. I thought the cooled portion would use the fan, but the 3 settings for the heat side of the switch would be 3 settings for the electric heating elements beneath the seat cover and above the seat foam.

So, the fan is actually doing the pushing of already heated air from the cars heater? I have already replaced the under-seat filters.

I think it is time to replace the heated side with after market heating pads that are vented for air cooled seats. Has anyone else done this and if so, have you reused the original switches?

Thanks!!

As far as I know, the heated and cooled seats are a peltier device, aka a TEC. This device uses electricity to create a hot plate and a cold plate, and when the voltage is flipped the plates reverse. Our system uses a fan to take the air away from the hot/cold plate (whichever is on top I think) and blows it through ducting in the seats. Supposedly this is "efficient" because it requires no compressor and the same device can do both hot and cold. However, the actual efficiency of the device seems incredibly low because it doesnt heat up or cool the air well enough from such a small low power device. We really need 3 or 4 such devices along the ducting tract to help maintain proper temperatures of the air being moved, but that would be expensive and hard to do.

I believe the heated seats are "air heat" not coil heat like other manufacturers. IMO, air heating and cooling the seats is not Infiniti's best feature. I wish they would just switch to coil heated seats and abandon the cooling feature.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm happy with my seats. I don't want to be sweating or freezing my nuts off depending on the setting. They get just cold enough and just warm enough.

Mine work too. when it''s 110 in Las Vegas and you have black leather seats, the air cooled seats are nice. Check the filters and vacuum the holes in the seats as clean as you can safely. Good Luck

I changed the seat filters on my M at 50,000 miles even though they did not look dirty. It did make a difference as far as heating and cooling. The filters are small and its my experience that do a visual on the filters may not be the best way to determine if they need to be changed. If you use the heat/cooled seats frequently I'd change the filters every 15000 miles. I don't think the seats use any air from the climate control system. Its all electric with cooling and heating driven by fans under the seats.

I stand corrected. As for the filters, how expensive are they and where does one get them? I'm approaching 100k and I've never changed em. Wouldn't hurt to do so.

Unfortunately they are expensive. I could only find them at the dealer. I don't remember how much, but it startled me. Good Luck

Hi there, how do you go about replacing them. I assume you take seats out to get at the filter?

I think you put the seat up all the way and all the way forward. Look up there from the back seat with a flash light and you'll see it. Gently wiggle it out and reverse to install. Pretty easy. Good Luck

Comparing the pic on your link to the actual filter "looks" like it should be a good match! The filter is priced superbly as well. Who wants to be the guinea pig...I mean lucky person...to find out if this one fits? :woot:

Moedawg,

i'll probably give it a shot...hopefully it works. I suppose the filters should be the same for an M45 vs M35. will let everyone know if they work out.
