you need to understand that since the head gasket gets crushed during installation, and to some extent it gets crushed a bit more after the first several heat cycles (which is why you hear of people telling you to retorque your head bolts/studs after a short period). and since we are comparing different materials and constructions, we need to remember that they will all crush differently under the same force. we should be comparing, if anything, the CRUSHED thickness of a given head gasket. i'm rather sure i've seen at least some companies advertise the crushed height of their gaskets, but you'll have to check before deciding which thickness you need.

you don't have to retorque head blots on modern engines with metal head gasket. the last time i remember reading retorque head bolts after 500 miles was on a 1985 mazda pickup, since that i have never seen a Japaneses car instructions that said to retorque head bolts. Do you know how much work it is to retorque sr20det head bolts?
