A Cometic head gasket is around $135 and a greddy headgasket is around $200, should i spend the extra $65 for a greddy headgasket? i will be using ARP head studs.

greddy is crap. apex and power enterprise make really good gaskets if you're willing to spend the money, but cometic aren't bad either just get the right size

the cometic hg is fine. i even think that enjuku uses them in their cars. hell, anything is better then the stock carbon hg. the only reason it should mess up is if the head is not installed properly.

I've had no problems on the greddy or apexi head gaskets.

we have had the chance to use and compare all the headgaskets available for the sr20det pretty much when building up our drag s14

the best option on the market is the Apexi headgasket - the design of the "fire" rings is superior to the hks or greddy

although fyi we have used the greddy, hks and apexi headgaskets in our sr20det engines throughout the course of this season thus far and they all seem to work well - the apexi definately works the best though

i would stay away from the cometic - i know there are a lot of people that have good success with them but there are also many people that don't - in our particular situation we were going to try a cometic and upon receiving it we noticed definate clearance issues with it - not really the best design

How come you call the stock HG crap? Mines been holding up to 375whp @ 19-20psi. Truthfully i dont think the stock HG is all that bad for a car under 400whp as long as the tuning is decent. I run an Enthalpy Tune for that reason. Reason they blow is from high intake temps and detonation from poor tuning or overboosting. Has anyone really tried to see the limits of the stock HG? I know Enthalpy has gotten over 400whp with it along with a few others.

Ive been running this setup since March. Havnt dynoed but im pretty sure im around 370+whp. With no knock or detonation, im not worried one bit with the stock HG. Ive also gone over 25 passes at the drag strip with this setup too with no problems.

this is true. no to mention alot blow from improper instaliation. but not many of us are professional shops. most of us get a chiped ecu and call it good.

also, i didn't call it crap. i said that almost anything is better then the stock headgasket. this is because metal > carbon.

You dont need to be a professional shop to have a reliable car. Just need to be willing to spend the money. If your not willing then dont bother with high power. Im running Enthalpy Tune (mail order) and SAFCII to adjust AFR with the Innovate LM1. Did a 160mph run last night starting in 3rd and i didnt see knock one bit.

Stock hg thickness is 0.8mm x 86mm. Anything larger will begin to lower compression.

you need to understand that since the head gasket gets crushed during installation, and to some extent it gets crushed a bit more after the first several heat cycles (which is why you hear of people telling you to retorque your head bolts/studs after a short period). and since we are comparing different materials and constructions, we need to remember that they will all crush differently under the same force. we should be comparing, if anything, the CRUSHED thickness of a given head gasket. i'm rather sure i've seen at least some companies advertise the crushed height of their gaskets, but you'll have to check before deciding which thickness you need.

in my book, 8.5:1 static c/r is about as low as i'd want to go unless i had a purpose-built race car, in which case i'd probably still run 8.5:1 or greater unless massive boost demanded otherwise. lower c/r makes for worse puttering around town/out of boost driving, which does happen occasionally . of course higher boost levels increase the dynamic c/r, but remember that big cams lower it as well.

just trying to keep the actual physics of what's happening on your minds so you can apply it and go faster .

I'll be running the same as a lot of people. Cometic stock thickness hg with arp studs. A friend of mine runs the same with no problems.

Do companies measure the HG thickness before or after being compressed?
