the Cometic MLS headgasket is like $70 and the Cometic HP headgasket is like $100. They both are multi layer steel but the HP gasket has a thicker ring right around the bore of each cylinder to provide a better seal and clamp. The HP gaskets obviously are rated for cars running lots of boost and making alot of power. The good thing about multi layer steel headgaskets is that you dont have to retorque ARP head studs with the use of it. It doesnt compress like an OEM headgasket.

what do you guys think of o-ringing the block and using a specifically-fit headgasket to butt up against those grooves?

There is a machine shop by me that i talked to about building my engine up for my turbo kit that has done that to a couple KA's. He said he could do it, but I honestly didn't know what it does or how to do it or its purpose in general. BUT I DO KNOW IT CAN BE DONE... The important thing LOL

Hope it helps
