Take it to the absurd extreme... what is the speed of sound in outer space? At that "altitude", there is no medium for the sound to travel through at all.

But sound is a wave, just like light is... and light can travel through nothingness, so why can't sound? This s*** is getting intense.

Sounds is transmitted through gases and liquids, etc...You don't have any of that in a vacuum.

Sounds needs something to be transmitted.Light does not, light is made up of photons and does not depend on other particles to be transmitted.

I don't get why this is intense of "fffuuuu" worthy. D:

I think it would be funny if he fell onto a satellite... I don't know how far out satellites are, but it would be humorous.

I hope he catches a bird on the way down. That might hurt though, hitting a bird at that kind of speed. :P

So sound can not travel through empty space? All other waves can (Gamma rays, cosmic rays, X rays, UV rays, visibile light rays, infra red waves, micro waves, radio waves).

Space is "racist" towards sound? Sounds like sound is getting the shaft.

I guess this is more or less an equation for the speed of sound:

taken from: http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~broholm/l28/node4.html

so if your density is 0... all hell breaks loose cos you can't divide by 0.
article wrote:Sound waves are traveling pressure waves in a fluid (gas or a liquid)..... A consequence of this is that there can be no sound propagation in vacuum. We verify this by showing that an otherwise noisy personal alarm device becomes completely silenced when placed in a vacuum. Corresponding to the pressure wave is a displacement wave s(x-vt) of atoms from where they would be if there had been no sound propagating. The relationship between the displacement wave and the deviation from average pressure is a characteristic property of the fluid
I was actually thinking that in my original post, but then thought of the wave thing. Sucks to be sound in space I guess.

There is no sound in outer space.

Sound is a variation in pressure, which cannot, by definition, exist in a vacuum.

Just cause it has the word "wave" in it doesn't mean it's the same as everything else.

Like Greg said, sound wave is the change of pressure. It needs something physical to 'influence' that change in pressure, be it liquids, solids, gases...That's as much as I know...

All the waves you list are the exact same thing, other then being different wavelengths.

Sound and light are completely different animals, rather then just variations in wavelength.

Unless there is some kind of gaseous medium (interplanetary medium). But this sound could not be heard by the human ear.

Oh, and (sun's) light can't travel to the bottom of the ocean, but sound can.

yeah but that is cos there is particulate matter that blocks the light... but I see what you are getting at. I'm gonna go to space and rock out with a guitar, just for shens.

QFT

We can't see it, but it's there like air. matter is everywhere.
