Alright, tell me what you think. I've asked this question in a few places so I don't miss anybody's answer. What do you guys think about an organization for import enthusiasts, created in cooperation with police departments and local groups like Racelegal.com. Something for the more resposible among us. I've talked to a few people involved with dragnet, and they claim that if we were to start policing ourselves, those of us who chose to enjoy our passion resposibly can lessen the hassle caused by a few morons. Right now this is just a thought, but if I can get enough people in the San Diego area who think this is a decent idea, maybe something can come of it. Anyway, let me know what you think.

How would you, or them, propose that we police ourselves? Man, sometimes I wish I lived in Coronado...

Ahhh Grasshapa! That's why The Ryno asked for input. He sometimes needs the input of other like-minded aminals. I don't wish I lived in Coronado, I just wish I had their money.

Policing ourselves? As in, making sure everyone has street legal cars? As in, no Srs? As in smog legal? No thanks. Id rather get a ticket and a bad look from a cop. And btw, your not gonna get many followers, All the racers here in cali have something illegal on thier cars...

You asked if we thought it was good idea, not how would we do it. I assumed you had some structure as to how we would "police ourselves". I have no idea how we would police ourselves. I know my car isn't street legal, so I'm out.

..... Yes we should go after JAPAN. There are no us manufactures of Srs. There are IMPORTERS who import from japan or various other countries, to sell in the U.S. Putting a Blockade on Import businesses would be a bad ideaalso the same idea as companies sell guns, but if you use one outside of a range its illegal (besides hunting, you get my drift)

i know what ryno is talkin about. well, sorta. i myself will probably be involved here in charleston, SC. we have a DARE program. u know, keep kids off drugs, say no, etc. i know a lot of people in the police force here, so they want to bring me in during the summer time and go to various summer camps and display my car while they do the whole "say no" thing. i mean, u come to think about it, a lot of little kids look up to you if u have a car like what we're into. i guess sometimes it goes for the good of other people too. i have worked with kids a lot within the past 5 years, and I know how much it means to parents when there is an older individual that they can look up to. u guys see what i'm saying? ANYWAYS...my car is street legal, but from what i am interpreting from u is ur talkin about the guys that do stupid **** on the road. i know as far as south carolina goes, we don't have emissions, so its virtually impossible to get caught with an engine swap. so hopefully ur talkin about the reckless driving issues:~Scott

illegal is illegal. To a cop they are not going to turn a blind eye to these cars because they dont street race anymore...They would want the whole kabang, and i think its a bad idea.

Here's the gist, Yes, currently in CA, CARB restrictions make SR's illegal, and SR's aren't the only thing that you can get slapped silly for, not even very high on the list. The purpose of my whole idea is to give us a jumping off point to change some of the blanket restrictions that Ca has imposed on our cars. Unfortunately most of the publicity that our sport has recieved has been negetive. I'd like to see a group of us with not only a positive image, but also a positive INFLUENCE, and unless a whole truckload of us get together and show community leaders that we're not all a bunch of delinquents with high powered death machines, nobody is going tto take any of our desires seriously. Know what I mean?

The problem is, you still have illegal modifications to your car. If you make yourself a prominent member of the community, and the police do not enforce the laws then even more people will start breaking them. The police have to show a presence, you won't have a positive influence because theres too many stupid people, and all you'll be doing is advertising your car is illegal, and giving the police a reason to crack down on you because everyone knows who you are. CARB does not make the SR illegal, the SR is just plain illegal, however CARB does make a ****load of other stuff illegal. Enjoy your day.

Alrighty, so we've established that the SR is illegal...sortof...Where does that leave us? Are we all planning on just driving around and hoping for the best? Seems to the Ryno that there might be a better way. Obviously running around with a big banner saying that there's a lot of illegal parts on your car is not the brightest idea ever, but ask yourself this, Why do the cops look at every Japanese car and wonder how many laws are being broken? Aside from which, just out of morbid curiousity, if you have an SR in your car did you register the car? How?

Actually, yeah, a lot of people drive around just hoping that nothing will happen, and they rely on all the idiots out there to get caught for them. Its sort of like Drug Lords, you know that they're doing illegal stuff, but you're so busy with the pusher on every corner you don't have much time to go after them. Also, the reason cops do that is because quite a lot of cars are breaking the law, fortunately for most of us we aren't announcing it with a 6 foot wing. As far as registering the SR, a lot of people go to the test with the KA with the intent of figuring out how to pass the next one in two years, or they go to a crooked inspector.

Also, there is no sort of, the SR is plain illegal, so is the CA18, so are the RB motors when they aren't in skylines, and lastly, so are other swaps like V8s and whatever else you put under the hood in most states. In most states putting an engine in a car that was never offered in any trim model of that car, and/or is older than the model year of the vehicle that it is being transplanted in to is illegal. Also, in most states that have emissions laws, KA-Ts are illegal too.

Simply because someone has to make the Ryno feel special. Even if he has to do it himself.

I was in my buddys riced GSR when we got pulled over for squeeling around a turn, the cop made him pop the hood and gave him a lot o shiz about the cai, even though it was street legal. Here in cali you have to be carefull when you have a mod car.

Hehe, another member suggested moving the hood latch mechanism, then when the cop tells you to pop the hood, you can pull the button and the hood won't open, and appologize and say its broken. : ) He can't cite you for not having a functioning hood release. : )

Quote »was the cop a mechanic or something that he would know what SHOULD be under the hood?[/quote] they gave a lot of chp down here classes in order to tell whats a mod and whats legal or not. They even get nasty sometimes and measure your car to see if its below the legal limit. This is all under the "racer crack down." Whats funny is they point to street racing for deaths, but thier only examples down here are a couple kids at school who were drunk and in domestics, a mustang and a f150 crash..something really lame.

You put something in through the fake grille in the front and push the release

As Dauntless said, there are a lot of things that go into a car, engine, part, whatever being illegal. If you look around long enough though, you're going to see exceptions to all of these rules. I've seen hundreds of kits, porsche replica bodies powered by VW beetle engines, tub bodied dune buggies. All kinds of things powered by something else. Having said that, if you can get a "Rolls Royce" that you built in your garage and dropped a VW into registered and street legal, Surely there is hope for just about anything else. I know there are probably thousands of restrictions that none of us know about, and probably just as many loopholes.

Actually, those are kit cars, and they have restrictions as to how many miles they can be driven per year... Kit Car law varies by state though, but it all falls under standardized regulations, I just can't remember where they are. ; )

Umm....... you don't seem to understand engine swaps are illegal for STREET USE. Importing is legal because the engine could still be used for a race car or show car that has to be trailered to the location. NO LOOPHOLES!!!!!!!!

Daunt the broken hood cable idea.....Excellent:thumbup
