Before I start modifying my Q I just want to know if it will ever truly be a fast car. I want to be able to drag race, and not get murdered, is that possible with Q's?

<Whew>...

I'm gonna be as nice as I can here... Bear with me.

First off, a 10-sec car is beyond "fast".

The Q is a capable performer among similarly-sized cars, it'll run high-14's with minimal mods and good maintenance.

To put one in the 10's would require quadruple-digit horsepower, significant chassis work, and a ton of suspension design.

I don't ask this as a flame, but have you ever *driven* a true 10-sec car?

Man, 10seconds on a independent rear suspension is a scary thought....

AS MUCH AS I LOVE THE VH45, you arent going to be making 1000HP effectively form a 4.5L motor. youre going to want to swap in a domestic big block with a powerglide or a TH400 or something that can handle it, youll want an auto for it too..

Youre not going to be racing a Q anymore, you're going to be racing a gutted G50 chassis with some domestic motor, and basically no suspension....

You could run 12s and still keep it Q-ish (say 500HP).... 500HP could get you into the 12s with slicks and a built stock auto..... You could probably sitll drive it like a Q...

on paper, to get into the mid 10s, your going to need cut out 500lbs out of the Q and need 600WHP.... That of course assumes everything is 100%, so your probably going to need about 700WHP to make it work.

Didn't it take a 250 NOS shot for Dr. B to get into the 12's?

I am sorry some girl last night told me to talk to her after I get a 9 second car, and she was trash talking my infiniti. It made me really mad and I was like F&*) off. Aparently she is an idiot who knows nothing about cars. It made me feel sad, if I put some mods on my 45, and got nos would it be able to smoke about any of the ricers in my town? Most of them have 4 and 6 cylinders, but could my q with nos win against a turbo 4, or what about a 6. I don't know if it could beat a turbo, or a supercharged one. Thanks for the postsEven though it was a stupid one thanks for helping the new guy out.

I think it was 275 shot.. 100 shot JWT (actually closer to 75, was using a .046 instead of the recommended .052)... plus a wet shot 175 i think....

so figure 225-275... was enough to run 12.6 with slicks... most was high 12s.

Remember he was using a very low efficient torque converter, not a billet one which you'd want to run to get maximum efficiency.

You can't really compare the ricers to the Q. They are so much lighter and with all the aftermarket go-fast goodies available for those things they can easily squeeze out 500+ horses from those little 4 bangers. You'd be doing pretty good to beat even a stock WRX, SRT-4, or EVO in a Q even with NOS.

The Q's a nice sleeper and you will no doubt raise some eyebrows with it's performance but you might wanna stay out of the ricer street racing scene with it or you are likely to get your feelings hurt often. Now if you spring for one Wes's superchargers AND some NOS you might get in the ballpark.

HHHHHMMMM, I looked at the posts from a long time ago, was that project ever finished? I am seriously interested in a supercharger, I am planning to pretty much strip down my Q's frame and take off every single heavy thing I can find, I have fiberglass fenders, a complete bodykit. That should take the weight down quite a bit. The fram itself is very bulky, but I think when its done it will run like a "Striped azz ape"

You really want to get rid fo the stock doors, they probably weigh 80-100lbs each especailly with the window and all that stuff. The fenders and bumpers are all really light... Fiberglass MIGHT be heavier!!

LOL!!!! Sorry but somebody deserves a little bashing (yes I am bored and thought I would check in witih you guys since I have been away for a while).

Lightweight doors? Are you for real? I think the girl looking for a 9sec ride has a better chance than you finding lightweight doors. If she wants a 9sec ride...send her to Miami!! I will show her a few 9sec rides that she won't forget Everybody has to start some place in life learning about various items and my suggestion would be for you to look before leaping.

Truth is....you are a statistic. As car forums has new people like yourself all the time saying they are going to do this and that, but then these people are never around after a couple weeks because they don't got the $$$ to do such a thing.

Good luck with your girl situation and your Q45.

Allow me to help. Recently my father passed away, I loved him very much, and we had always talked about turning his beater car into a beauty. When he passed he also left me being one of two children with an inheretence somewhere around 400.000 dollars. I have the money, I want this to be something out of the ordinary, and unique just like he was. But in a good way. I know alot of idiots get on here and post stupid things, but I want to learn so that I can have fun with this car. I didn't post this to be rude, I respect you for thinking of people like me as idiots, I am not an idiot I am an 18 year old with a dream.

Might be a better idea to get the Q in tip-top condition, and pick up something else for drag racing.

I'm a little concerned about the comment about having "fiberglass fenders and a body kit".

If there were 'glass fenders available for a Q, I'd know about them, and there are only a few bodykits made for the 94-96 Q and few are available in the US (and they're expensive).

A 240sx can be built into a 10-sec car, especially if money is no object. Read up in the KA-T forum here, our very own AMS Performance has a 9-sec 240.

If money is no problem then get rid of your Q. If you want a fast carbuild a ford or chevy. Or if money is truely no problem start here.....http://www.barrett-jackson.com/auctionresults/

Listen we here all know the Q is really not fast. Yes I have nos but any Mustang built can trash me up and down. If I wanted a fast car I would never have bought a Q. I bought for looks. Here is a thought....your Q will NEVER be fast, neither will mine. It's about looks and stylenot speed. Plus street racing is illegal and can get you killed.(thats the dad in me speaking)

I know it won't be, but it just makes me jealous to see other v8's out there. I just don't see why this motor isn't quicker, it just doesn't make sense, why can an engine be so inefficient with 17 mpg and not have more hp and torque? Usually bigger, and less effecient engines have tons of power.

How is it inefficient? 300+ HP out of 4.5 liters is pretty damn healthy.

Show me a domestic naturally-aspirated V8 from the early / mid-90's that does that and I'll eat my hat.

You're hauling around a heavy car... Put the VH45 in a 200-lb car, figure a way to put the power to the ground, and it'll run 11's.

Still never seen "duraflex" (sounds like FRP) fenders for a Q...

Got the transmission in it today, and it fired right up, still need to change the oil, put in a cold air intake, and run some Muscle Man through it to clean the fuel injectors. I am very happy, I still need a few parts yes, but its coming along just fine.

My thoughts exactly. Im sure it has MANY issues.

Do we know a thing about this kids car even? year?? Mileage?? Let see if this is a person that knows somthing or just some kid that was handed a Q as a first car and wants to turn it into a race car.

I see no reason to bash the young guy. hes inexperienced and has more money than most here will ever attain.

Keep the q45 to take the nice girls out in and get an F-body if you want cheap speed. or a stang, or a wrx or whatever. Just not a 4000lb luxo car.

My Q can go 1/4 mile...and, it can drive for 10 seconds. It just can't do both at the same time.

Next time just give her the option...10 seconds in the Q, or a 1/4 mile in the Q...her choice.

Yes, the mid-90's Northstar was rated at 295-300 hp (with 0.1 more displacement) - Also a capable performer.

Neither the VH45 or the L37 gets near to what our OP is looking for...

if you can keep head gaskets from blowing or keep oil inside the oil pan, or the fact that the northstar is FWD....
