Any gun owners on the board that aren't too paranoid to discuss small arms on the Internet?

I've had a concealed carry permit since I was 19 and currently pack a Glock 33, which is chambered for the .357 SIG cartridge. The pistol is also equipped with Meprolight night sights and a plug in the handle. My Beretta 92 handles home defense as it is a high-capacity weapon. Standard Mossberg 500 is also readily available if needed.

What about anyone else? Preferences? Experience? Or am I the only nutjob here? :D

How do you like the 99? Isn't that the .45? I also carry an ASP in my car. My G33 is loaded with 125gr. CorBon JHP's. Chrono'd at 1350fps out that stubby little barrel. Actually faster than a 4" .357 Mag with equivalent load! Less recoil and muzzle blast as well.

I sold my Colt HBAR last year to pay for part of my honeymoon in Cancun. I miss having a squared away rifle, but I think I'll replace it with a DSA SA58. That's about $1600 though, so that has to take a back seat to my car habit right now.

I have a Hogue grip on my Beretta.

Maine, you need to trade in that Jennings and get a higher grade 9mm. How do you like your brother's Ruger?

The 99 is the same as your 92 (but w/ adj. sights). Old and heavy but sweet, love the xtra capacity.

No, no no. I'm really not nuts! That was at a Soil show where the bouncer went nuts on me. I was doing just fine until his five bouncer buddies jumped in. How did we get on that subject anyway? Not really something I discuss with someone I've just met!

Gator,

What are you going to use the gun for? Secondly, have you had any training in handguns?

There are many factors to consider when buying a handgun.

most everyone likes the Glocks.depending on your budget, there are some great H&K's, and SigSauers out there.I use to own a Glock 19 (loaded w/ alternating hollow poitns and FMJ) which I loved, I used to shoot the Colt M1911 and my current duty weapon in a 9mm Berretta (kinda big).If you dont wanna spnd a lot of money they are tons of good domestic pistols avalable from $250 on up, new.Glocks are abot 400-500 depednign on model and what kinda del u get.SigSauers are expensive as are H&K's. (P7 is an excellent Pistol)

I currently own a romanian AKM (which is NOT an AK47, why does everybody think that, nobody has made or issued AK-47's in decades, almost all those guns people call AK-47's are really AKM's or even AK-74's), which is chambered for 5.56 mm.To make for easy availabilty of Ammo (I have a couple of thousand rounds at home, just in case:D .)

I now wish I purchased a AK74 clone.Even tho the ammo is harder to find it can still be found cheaply and the 5.45mmx39mm Ammo is an EXCELLENT round. It's the equal in penetration (or better) of the new SS109 5.56 mm Ammo we use in the M16A2, yet still the same (or better) wound cavity that the original M16A1 Ammo did.So the best of both worlds. Also you can buy GREAT east german military 30 round bakelite magazines, which are nearly indestructible both in their feeder lips and their bodies. For 10 bukcs usually those can be had. While AK series magazines for 5.56 mmm are $30 for a inferior romanian steel magazine.

I might buy a AK-74 clone soon, they are about $500 and I will buy a BUNCH of magazines (never can have too much Ammo)

Fred...:D

That's a badboy! I have the USP in 9. I once emptied a couple clips from an MP5 at a gun store in Vegas. That was quite an experience. I also have an AR-15, though I'm thoroughly embarrassed to say I've never even fired it. I just bought it to beat the CA ban.

daedalus, you've never fired your AR-15? those things are sweet. i'm embarassed that i don't have a gun. i would buy a handgun but you have to be 21, but i can buy rifles and shotguns because they are for "hunting" and handguns are not. my uncle in colorado has a glock 9mm , an AR-15, a .22 handgun and an elephant gun, which he didn't let me shoot. i would buy a glock, but i also want an assault rifle with 3-round burst or full auto setting, but those aren't legal are they?

has anybody shot tracer bullets? i want to try them for targets, just for fun, although they're like 50 cents a round.

fred, if you had the 7.62 AKS i would recommend getting the 75 round drum magazine that's in a catalog i have.

i do have a usmc ka-bar knife, though.

Glocks are excellent weapons, just keep in mind the purpose for which you are buying the weapon. Different weapons fill different tactical niches. You certainly wouldn't be able to pack an assault rifle when going for groceries. As far as full-auto goes, that is a Class III weapon and you must get a tax stamp. They are $200 extra on every CIII weapon you purchase. In order to get this tax stamp you must pass a rigorous background check and be willing to let the BATF eye you like a hawk.

Full-auto is overrated anyway, unless it's belt-fed. Rapid semi-auto is where it's at, IMO. Tracers are fun, but shoot them at night to get the full effect. Really cool with NVG's and a PAC4!

i've always wondered if instead of getting a concealed gun permit you got old west style holsters to put you six-shooter in and maybe a bandoleer for bullets. it's not concealed so why do you need the permit?

I'd much sooner recommend getting a permit before walking around in public with a sixgun and an ammo bandolier! There's gotta be laws against that in some way. Transporting weapons with ammo, as opposed to keeping them in separate containers? Yeah, I've never fired the AR. The nearest 'cool' range is a couple hours away, and I like being fat dumb and happy in the little nook of a neighborhood I live and work in. I.e., I'm just plain lazy. I don't have the real Colt version (too pricey). Mine is a Springfield, I think (again, with much embarrassment). I'm a bit worried about it jamming...some co-workers bought simiar weapons at around the same time (pre-ban) and they all reported problems with jamming. I figure it'll break in, but anyone know anything about this?

In some places it doesn't need to be concealed. Permits are issued by the various states and they all have different rules and criteria for issuance. Some states it's very easy to get a permit and some it's an absolute beotch. Some don't even have permits. Some are reciprocal, ie you can carry in Michigan with an Indiana permit and vice-versa.

As for it being concealed, it's got to do with intimidation. The state doesn't want you going around and showing your weapon off to any and everyone, thus scaring them. Some people have a power complex and need people to know they're carrying. These are the people that should not be allowed to carry. If I'm armed, you won't know it. ;)

Oh, and Ka-Bars are cool.

in colorado a shooting range wasn't a problem, the forest service guys made a clearing 30 yds of the road that you can use anytime and shoot anything you want. there was massive piles of rusting casings.

Yes. It may take 500 rounds to break your rifle in. A well-made weapon will often have tight tolerances which can affect the cycling. The springs are new as well. All of these things among others will affect the reliability of the weapon. When you break it in, you give the bolt a chance to seat in the breech, put the springs through their range of motion and wear the other contact surfaces so that they mate up. Kind of like wearing a new set of brake pads in on the discs.

If your rifle is a Springfield, you have a good weapon. Wanna sell it?

damn, texas concealed weapon stuff says you have to be 21, but also says this:

(3) "Concealed handgun" means a handgun, the presence of which is not openly discernible to the ordinary observation of a reasonable person.

so i guess i can carry a six-shooter in a holster without a permit, but that would probably break other laws.

I'm pretty sure the law here in FL says that you can't transport a loaded gun unless its concealed and you have a carry permit. So you might be able to strap on your six shooter as long as it wasnt loaded, but im sure you would still get hassled.
