So what exactly IS under the cloth? Is it just smooth black plastic? I might jsut rip mine off, hit it with some 400 grit sandpaper and leave it as a "matte finish" glovebox :) The Nathan cares little about looks but HATES that fabric crap. Besides, its weight savings :D

Mine wasn't smooth plastic

It was black; but I think from the material being in there so long and the glue they use it's got ridges in it..

In this pic you can kinda see what i'm talking about:

Hmmm, I MIGHT be able to sand through all that, sure is ugly though! Thanks Fuzion :)

What do you want for the cat......Anyway, I hate our window cranks, Waser/turn signal controls and clovebox handle. They are all nasty looking. I bought some new window cranks but I have no idea what to do about the waser stalks and the door handle. BTW that would look nice in some Bride fabric.....

Acura did the same thing with the second gen Tegs. They didn't do it the glove box though (I still wonder what they were smoking on that one).

My door panels however had the tweed and they were actually starting peel off the car, so I just ripped them off. it leaves adhesive residue that's a pain in the *** to get off, but looks soo much better after some cleaning and a coat of protectant:)

I'm betting Nissan threw the tweed over the vinyl on the doors like Acura did.

once you rip off the fabric layer, reveals the old yellow gunk of foam and glue. give it some good sanding throughout to get rid of the yellow stuff and you could probably be happy as is--without rewrapping, since the plastic is somewhat black.

to both of you, GREAT JOB!!! both look impressive. and to think, you did it yourself! how long did it take you to complete this? did you use a heat gun or anything? or just glue and let it dry? how long does it take to dry? was it expensive? just throwing in some "whatever questions" (in case others are wondering too) to do the door, how do you... well im guessin you get a big enuff piece to cover up the whole door then glue it on then cut... or how does that go? thanks again

p.s. you should do a step by step write up.

peace

Step 1: remove your glove box from car.

Step 2: Remove all screw from backing of the glove box

Step 3: Start at a corner and begin to peel off the old fabric. It should come off in one piece. After that you can sand the face of the glove box to remove any of the left over material.

Step 4: Take the old fabric and use it to trace an out line on the new fabric of you choice. make sure to make the outline a little bigger, that way you have more room for mistakes.

Step 5: test fit the fabric that you cut, make any cuts that are neccesary. Spray the glove box face with some glue. place the fabric on the glove box and strecth it to remove any wrinkles. flip the box over and spray the glue on the edges of the box. now you just fold any extra fabric to the back side, to hold it in place I used some small staples. let dry.

Step 6: You are now finished, go put it back in your car and injoy.

mandoz85 thanks for the contribution to the how-to.

although, the "All Purpose" glue might not hold-up over time (i could be wrong ;) ). i would go with a spray on glue that's more specific for the application.

the result will be much greater quality if we spend time on it

I did this a couple of months ago, one day when I was bored. I used real leather that my mom had lying around. I also went ahead and cut out pieces and had her sew me a real leather shift boot. All free. Me likey free...

The same day I ripped off the carpet stuff on my door panels and was going to make leather replacements, but I got lazy, plus they look fine the way they are.

You could also use some slow setting epoxy painted on with a foam brush you plan on throwing away :) West Systems most likely makes exactly what I'm thinking of.

I tried to do the door panels.. funk that! I think a heat gun would help.. what a pain in the arse.. I got the main part of it done but the hard part was getting it to stay in the little "U" shaped groove where the stock material was tucked in...I ended up putting the stock stuff back on. I will try it again soon..
