Hey everyone, please read AirBox 101 to get the scoop on the steps preceeding where I start. Everyone wants an intake with a cold air ram, well, I decided since I had some time to kill ( still don't have that damn air conditioner belt on, but I don't know if I"m gonna put it on cuz my woman isn't complainin : ) I decided to open up that restrictive factory airbox, and include a step by step process of what I did. : )

Heres the tools you'll need:1 Screw Driver1 Tin Snips or Clippers of some sort1 Hack Saw1 Roll Electrical Tape

Heres all the tools

I ended up just brute forcing most of it. : )

Heres my engine bay when we started, I had just disconnected the factory airbox, and was getting ready to unscrew the bottom half to remove it.

So, I can't seem to get the bottom of the airbox out, the screw thats in there is stripped or something, and there just doesn't seem to be any way to remove it, so what do I do you ask? Well, I resort to man's best friend, the opposible thumb. : ) I decided I would just cut the plastic tab that the screw was screwed into.

After attempting the hack saw, I found out that it just didn't seem to fit, so I grabbed some snips

And sure enough that bad boy came out. : )

As seen here, it turns out those two knobs aren't screws at all, they just slide in like lincoln logs.

Here is the bay with no box in there.

So, from here you have two choices, one, you can fit the filter element into the top half of the airbox and electrical tape it shut, you just have to make sure and seal off all the edges so that its air tight. This is the easiest way, it looks a little ghetto but its very clean. If you do this, you're all done. HOWEVER, I didn't have any electrical tape. : ) So I decided to go route two, and use the bottom half of the airbox to hold the filter in...after some modifications of course. : )

So I pin that b**** down and go at it with the hack saw around the edge. After I had cut thru, I forced in the snips and started cutting away.

Make sure that you don't cut into the seat for the air filter, or it will all be moot. You can cut all that extra **** away, just don't cut the latches or the little ring that covers the air filter. With that said, heres my finished product. I could have made it cleaner, but it was night fall, I was being eaten by mosquitos and I fear the west nile disease, so that will have to do for now.

I ain't seen a gaping hole like that since Freak's Sister...

: )

Here is the cut bottom half with the filter element inside. Look at all that exposed filter, talk about freeing up some airflow.

Right here is supposed to be an image showing how I cut the cold air port off the y-pipe, but for some reason it didn't come out on my camera, but basically all I did was take the y-pipe and cut the curved tube off it with the hack saw. Then, I put the tube back in to the hole leading to the cold air port by the wheel and stuffed the curved end underneath my filter element. Voila, cold air intake port that goes straight in to the engine instead of thru that stupid y-pipe.

Here is the enging with everything back in the bay. I forgot to take a picture of the monstrous, gaping hole in the engine bay, I was kind of in a rush.

And heres all the spare parts when I was done. : )

The result: One hell of an intake for free. Damn does that baby roar, I forgot how loud that sucker is when you get rid of the factory airbox. While I didn't get rid of the factory airbox, I sure freed up a lot of surface area. : ) I would say this is just as effective as most intakes, however it is significantly more ghetto. : )

Damn does that sucker roar, one more time cuz I can't stress it enough. : ) If I had to guess I'd say I have another 50 to the wheels. : ) Hehe, well, not really, but its at least a couple horsepower. : ) Hope that helped, any questions? I'd have to say for the cost of nothing its a great mod dollar for dollar. : )

Also, I'm not responsible for any injury or damage you cause to yourself or your vehicle. Enjoy your day! : )

As ghetto as it is, it actually does pull a lot harder, and a lot louder past about 3500 RPMs. : )

Its lots of fun, if I actually bothered enough to own a picture of my girlfriends parents, it would have been taped there while I was hack sawing, it sure takes out a lot of anger. : )

I wish I had a jigsaw, that would have made things way cleaner, but I was lacking for real tools to do the job with. : )

mann..... this coming from a guy who is starting a 'performance' shop :P

will you offer things like Nismo Muffler bearings?

and I hope you tried to cut that like that..

that poor 240...

and I thought it was saved from some negligent owner when you bought it.

is this the poor car that is going to be blessed with an RB?

thats about what it is going to take to make up for all the mistreatment it has had in its lifetime.

Sheesh, whats with all this hate. : ) The 240 loves what I did to it, its thankful. Thats a damn nice thing I did, it breathes so much better now. Also, as far as the cut job, you saw the snippers I was working with. =P I"ll probably redo it tomorrow in the daylight so that its nice and smooth, that or I"ll frame it and electrical tape it. : ) Hehe, I can't believe that no ones giving me love, here I thought I did a really good job. : )

Also, yeah, this is the car thats going to be blessed with the RB, for now, maybe it will go to someone else though if I pick up another one, who knows. ; )

What you need is a Dremmel!!! I'm telling you man... nothing is better at making ghetto jobs look legit! The success of all my jimmy rigging jobs can be directly attributed to the over zealous use of my trusty Dremmel. Cut anything from PVC to 1/4" steel... the damn things are the best invention since....... I don't know what? You can cut, sand, buff.... clean... whatever! High speed rotary tools make me happy :D

Good s*** man, you are actually more ghetto than I am. I just drilled a ton of holes in the bottom of the airbox and dropped in a K&N, maybe I'll remodel mine a bit (its not as loud as I'd like).

Dude I'm not doing that **** to my car! I'll just get the airbox out of my parts car and cut the hell out of it. I would do it now, but I don't like our woods after dark.

yeah i dont understand all the hate going on here! Thats a very simple and cost effective mod. Think about it this way. An aftermarket intake is what? a shiny aluminum pipe with an OPEN filter element at the end. Daunttless' mod is the EXACT SAME THING! instead of a shiny pipe you have the stock plastic pipe, and now after cutting the gay air box apart you have an OPEN filter element. If all you people are lazy and only care about looks, then send me the $150 you're going to waste on a Gayjen intake.Good deal daunt, easy cheap power until you get a real engine under the hood :)

Never seen it, but it made me laugh. : )

Also, it was easier just to slide them out of the sockets than to unscrew them. : ) I tried to unscrew them unsuccessfully. : )

i'm just giving him a hard time for doing a job as if he was Dan240 or s14, not daunttless..... bastardizing his airbox.

there is no way I would spend 200+ on Injens crap.

sure I have a JWT popcharger..but I sure as hell didn't buy it new :)same goes for the nology plug wires

(red engine paint only gave 10hp, autoparts store was out of the 23.5hp yellow)

:;laughs:: I'll clean it up in the daylight tomorrow. : ) I'll take some more pictures to show just how much better it will look with a little precision. : ) Those little blue handled cutters were not exactly a precision instrument. : )

And I thought my setup was ghetto. I cut a big *** hole in mine and piped PVC out the bottom of the engine bay. At least I'm sucking cold air, which is more than I can say for all of your mothers!

just ripped mine out but I had a drop in K&N and dryer hose and duct tape man that worked wonders but the dryer hose got all torn up so had to rip it out. The engine was sucking air like a french whore sucking for a 10 dollar tip
