Great write up daunttless, wish you done it before I started hacking up my intake. There a couple conflicts with your intake, and the s14 intake. Mainly the temp sensor located at the bottom of the air box. I suppose you could attach it to the end of the air filter somehow, or just hack open the front half of the box and leave the sensor in its housing. I shelled out the $60 Can. for the adapter plus a cone style intake, put two holes in the opening of the intake, and mounted it on there. One month has passed, no problems, although my check engine light was on from day one with this vehicle.
There is also the removal of the resonator box in the S14, really restrictive and is a nuisance to remove. I'd explain it, but don't have corresponding pics to go with the explaination, so I'll leave it up to you guys. A couple hints - 2 of the bolts are easy to reach from the front drivers side fender. A ratchet with extension is needed to make it easier as well. Really lets air come through the drivers side of the bumper, and you can run a dryer hose down there to improve air flow even more.
Lastly, the Y pipe removal. There are 2 pipes from the air box, one going into the resonator box, and the other going to the front of the car (grille, right above the rad). Rip the one to the resonator box out PLEASE. If you remove the other Y pipe, the one going inside the grille, you will leave a little gap exposed, allowing water to enter the engine bay, which can result in corrosion. My buddies Greddy header is actually beginning to rust and discolor from the removal of this pipe. To correct it, you can use silicone to seal the hole, or even more ghetto would be to cut the pipe in half, seal the end of it, and bolt it back into place.
IMO, shell out the $60 Canadian ($40 if you make your own adapter) and just slap it on. Real easy to do, takes about an hour to install (have to lengthen the temp sensor wire a couple inches) and makes a great, cheap mod all the same. But the ghetto mod is fun, for those who like to get their hands dirty. And the growl from the intake is great at WOT!!!
