Great write up daunttless, wish you done it before I started hacking up my intake. There a couple conflicts with your intake, and the s14 intake. Mainly the temp sensor located at the bottom of the air box. I suppose you could attach it to the end of the air filter somehow, or just hack open the front half of the box and leave the sensor in its housing. I shelled out the $60 Can. for the adapter plus a cone style intake, put two holes in the opening of the intake, and mounted it on there. One month has passed, no problems, although my check engine light was on from day one with this vehicle.

There is also the removal of the resonator box in the S14, really restrictive and is a nuisance to remove. I'd explain it, but don't have corresponding pics to go with the explaination, so I'll leave it up to you guys. A couple hints - 2 of the bolts are easy to reach from the front drivers side fender. A ratchet with extension is needed to make it easier as well. Really lets air come through the drivers side of the bumper, and you can run a dryer hose down there to improve air flow even more.

Lastly, the Y pipe removal. There are 2 pipes from the air box, one going into the resonator box, and the other going to the front of the car (grille, right above the rad). Rip the one to the resonator box out PLEASE. If you remove the other Y pipe, the one going inside the grille, you will leave a little gap exposed, allowing water to enter the engine bay, which can result in corrosion. My buddies Greddy header is actually beginning to rust and discolor from the removal of this pipe. To correct it, you can use silicone to seal the hole, or even more ghetto would be to cut the pipe in half, seal the end of it, and bolt it back into place.

IMO, shell out the $60 Canadian ($40 if you make your own adapter) and just slap it on. Real easy to do, takes about an hour to install (have to lengthen the temp sensor wire a couple inches) and makes a great, cheap mod all the same. But the ghetto mod is fun, for those who like to get their hands dirty. And the growl from the intake is great at WOT!!!

Dauntt, you have saved my motor from possible damage. Had I not tried your Air box mod, i would not have noticed the giant crack in my intake pipe right in front of my throttle body. God knows what sort of sh** my motor was ingesting. My baby thanks you.

PS my intake sound is amazing and i definately notice more power and quicker revs. thanks again.

Daunt man,

You gotta make up an archive of ghetto free HP mods. Then i can use em all and have a high performance race car... Well maybe not high performance, but a ghetto race race non the less ;)

It'd be great fun haha.

you are painting your valve cover? I have been looking for a suitable, cheap, heat resistant clear coat or anything that will look good and protect as the factory coating is coming off in places. any suggestions? i would prefer clear or a nice satin finish.

It's is possible to only let it dry for a day... but the heat may cause bubbles... but i doubt it...

hey, i tried the air box alteration with good results, although it worked out slightly different in my case.

i have a 95 240sx, the resonator and air box are set up a little different than in the pics that duanttless posted. i started out by just unhooking the bottom of the box and wiring the filter in, that lasted a day.

the next day, i went to home depot and picked up some 2.5" shop vac hose for $20.96, i was going to leave the box open, but i took a better look at the bottom of the air box and saw that there were two holes left by the resonator and the intake, these holes face directly forward, and realized that the hose i bought fit perfectly into them (one is smaller than the other, but the shop vac hose has an expanded end, so i just cut this off for the smaller hole) then i saw that i had to take out the resonator to port these tubes into the front bumper. i did this by just turning my wheels to the left and taking out the resonator box with three bolts. then i just ran the two hoses down into the bumper, trying to make them as short as possible, and then secured them in a forward pointing position so they can catch air at high speeds. this isnt as loud as the open air box.

then the next day i bought a k&n filter for it.

now, after talking to duanttless (thanks), i am going to cut just the front part of the air box out and leave the back and sides to act as a heat shield from the headers behind it. and i am also going to take out the screen that is imbetween the air sensor and the air filter to free that up.

all in all it cost me 20.96, i got the air filter for free becuase my bro works at a parts store, but i guess this would have cost a little over 60.

don't forget to seal the opening left by the intake extension that went over the grille, could result in corrosion (I've seen it first hand).

The screen you are refering to, is that the one in the MAF?

peace

has any one removed the resenator box that is in the wheel well covered by the plastic lining? when i did this mod few monthes ago i tore it all out, an to my suprise my intake was attached to that box an it was nothing but that, a plastic box no other opening but where the intake attached to it , so originally my car was sucking in air from a sealed box, now that is ghetto nissan must have had it in for us in the early 90's
