Hello,

I tried to enjoy "The Grudge" last night with my girlfriend, and I assumed that the younger generation had the same values and courtesy that I had at that age. I was wrong. Constant talking, laughing at people dying, ect...... just stupid and sickening.

When it was time to leave, I noticed that all of the 18 and younger crowd spoke as if they were stuck in some sort of pseudo-MTV production. For example:

"word dog!""oh that was the s*it!" "feel me yo!""damn dog that was tight"

What has happened in the last decade? I enjoy reading and as such, I like to think that I have a somewhat verbose vocabulary. I speak with intelligence and almost never use slang unless there's a comical connotation involved. It's sad to think that EVERY young person I saw at the movie theater was speaking and acting like they had a double digit IQ.....and genuinely.

This country is going downhill fast; and it's tough to see any way to turn it around. It's sad to think that these people will be the future and if I have children, they would have to live in a world where decisions are made by this generation.

Baggy pants around your a*s, crooked hat, ear ring and "jammin' that new hip-hop joint yo"....... it's just terrible.

I'll try my hardest to attain an optimistic view, but I need a little help.

As a 16 year old i can say that not all of the "Youth" is like this. Personally i always wear a belt with my pants above my ***, i always wear my hats straight with the visor forward, and i would never want any unnecissary holes in my body. I agree wtih you that most of the youth thinks that they're all "gangsta" and what not, but not everyone, it depends where your from, who you hang around with, etc. I do see what your saying and in some aspects i agree with you, but please don't judge every "youth" you see as a person who "speaks and acts like they had a double digit IQ"

Fair enough!

I apologize for my broad-stroking generalizations. However, you'll prove me right if you're an a*s in public and ruin general attendance functions for everybody. My irritation isn't with dress, it's actions.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned actions always seem to be carried out by thuggish-hooligan wannabes. With three degrees, you obviously value education and probably act with respect and courtesy.

EDIT: Where did the post go that I replied to?

That's fine, I'm not one to get in an internet pissing contest, suffice it to say that I've made my point.

EDIT: I deleted the above post by accident, synopsis: looks are not dispositive.

While much of what you said is true, don't judge by appearances alone. I know MANY people that look very "thuggish", wear their hat sideways, speak in nothing but slang, but when put in the right situations are very intelligent are perfectly capable of speaking in a coherent manner. I consider myself at least resonably intelligent and have a vocabulary to rival most, but I tend to be judged on appearance as a stoner bum because I have somewhat long hair and I always wear flip flops, etc. And yes, I listen to hip hop, I also listen to a wide variety of other music including jazz, alternative rock, punk, classical, trance, etc. You have to appreciate things for what they are, not for the people that you associate them with.

Then again, judging by the behavior of the "children" that were in the movie theater with you that evening, you have sufficient reason to be aprehensive. Your generation had these people too though, and you had that darn rock-and-roll music! Just imagine what YOUR parents generation felt... probably quite similar to how you feel now.

Ah ha!!

I was just about to get to that! I fear that the term "younger generation" is a misnomer as I'm only 26. However, your reply does hold credence as "my generation" technically grew up with grunge as the driving musical force.

I hope that my age doesn't ruin my arguement, as there is a HUGE difference in maturity between 26 and 16-18. However, the question still remains:

What has happened in the last ten years? I have my suspicions but I'll let that sleeping dog lie.......

Can't judge a book by it's cover. when i watched The Grudge, there were ppl laughing. They laugh cuz they got scared. Thats the fun part of horror flicks in a place like a theater. What really ticked me off were these 2 ppl in the back that talked constantly through out the whol movie. The guys GF even sang a couple times during the movie. WTF ?!?!!? I seriously wanted to punch the guy. He also made some racial comments i didn't like during the movie. For example, 1 part of the movie was showing numerous pics of the japn girl. The guy was all like "is that her? is htat her?", and his girl was saying "yea" or something. then he said i can't tell, u know they all look alike. as for their age, i would be guessing 18-21. something like that.ok, next ranter

Are you using proper English now? I think that most people understand that speech and conduct must be adjusted in accordance with one's audience. You don't curse when you're speaking with your mom, though you might at a ball game or at the bar with your boys - time and place.

I noticed the word "rant" in the first post. I think it should be treated as such. If there is too much personal philosophy thrown around in this one, feelings might get hurt.

The young crowd obviously are speaking up for those who do not fit into that category. There will be one or two very narrow-minded opinions thrown in. Lastly there's gonna be a very impartial view of the situation that gets targeted by one side as a bleeding heart. I've seen it too many times.

For us older guys, we need to remember that our parent's didn't approve of 100% of the things we did. We grew out of it and moved forward. This generation has the possibility of doing the same thing. The worse thing we can do is label them. I've taken several of my nephews aside and pulled up their pants. I explained to them that if they advertise themselves as ignorant, they'll be perceived as ignorant. I got through to some, not to all. You'll get through to some, but not to all.

Hey, just ten short years ago I dressed like a "thug". At the same time I was being prospected by the military and several private colleges. A lot of people were surprised when I opened my mouth and they found their was an insightful, intelligent young man behind the parted eyebrows and hip hop gear. Clothes make not the man. Neither does his slang. Every generation has their own vocabulary. Some of it eventually turns into everyday diction. Words and phrases you use everyday were at on time slang. Words like cool, that's hot, on the bandwagon,....these are words that succeeded in becoming acceptable in civil conversation. Don't even get me started on contractions. And fashion...oy! Women wearing pants!?!

Here here! Thank you for your input! As I stated earlier, I'm more concerned with actions than rhetoric and I didn't mean to skew my thoughts in the vein of "speech".

However, my perceived reality is that the modern youth is leaps and bounds behind where I was ten years ago.

Welcome to Arizona. Where the boss can cuss you out and you can't do anything about it. Or if you work on a native american reservation. They fired you because they don't like you.

Sorry, I should have added. The old navy boss in Arizona.

I have to tell you. I catch myself feeling the same way a lot of the time that I am out and about, whether it be at a movie or a car show. Its crazy..and its not like I'm old, I'm only 23. But like has been seen by a couple of the posts, thankfully not everyone is like that.

What does that have to do with the current topic? If anything, it seems that your example would be speaking to the lack of respect and proper etiquite of the older generation. Not everyone grows out of it.

I have come up with a very fair way of viewing people on the whole. Largely, I despise humanity. Amongst the masses there are a few good people, but they are few and far between. When you consider that the average IQ is 100 in the United States, then HALF the people you meet have an IQ lower than that! Terrifying isn't it? I think we should start shooting people who use "ghetto" slang on sight, just on the grounds that its aurally offensive to me.

My wife (a teacher) was monitoring recess where the kids were watching a Cartoon Movie. There was a part in the movie where a horse was badly abused by the villain and the kids were laughing at the horse's plight. I was shocked and even a little pissed when my wife told me the news. These were 3rd graders.bud

Just wait 'til you're 34.

Then you get to be offended by the teens AND the twenty-somethings.

All you can do is have an influence where you can.

If I'm out in public and a youth is using foul language (loudly, with disregard for the presence of others), I will say something.

If I meet someone who is attired ridiculously (hey, it's not new, every generation has its extremes), I try not to judge. But if I they lend me their ear, i'll let them know that they MIGHT not be taken very seriously in certain environments based on their attire (and I'll make sure to empathize and say, "hey, people make judgements, you can't fight it").

My kids are being raised to express their individuality but not to offend, to be their own person but not to embarass me or their family, to dress as they please but to be a good example regardless of their clothing.

My oldest has longish hair and wears baggy drawers, won't tie his damn shoes, but he's a great kid, respectful and successful. So I'm cool with it.

The kids these days have ZERO respect for anything, if you can't see that, then you need to open your damn eyes. There is epidemic in our country, its called bad parents! Perfect example is ADD/ADHD, there is a HUGE number of kids on ritalin today because they are supposedly ADD. Anyone know what diagnosis of ADD is? Let me enlighten you!

_ Often fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirming while seated.

_ Having difficulty remaining seated.

_ Being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli.

_ Having difficulty awaiting turn in games or group activities.

_ Often blurting out answers before questions are completed.

_ Having difficulty in following instructions.

_ Having difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities.

_Often shifting from one uncompleted task to another.

_ Having difficulty playing quietly.

_Often talking excessively.

_ Often interrupting or intruding on others.

_ Often not listening to what is being said.

_Often forgetting things necessary for tasks or activities.

_Often engaging in physically dangerous activities without considering possible consequences.

Now how many of you fit the above criteria when you were a child? I know i sure as hell do!

Society's way of dealing with these "problem children" is to put them on drugs that make them so out of it they don't feel like doing anything! Parents need to step up and raise their children properly.

Some kids really are ADD, and the drugs really do help, but the majority are not

I *STILL* meet most of those criteria - Ask anyone who's met me!

Don't forget the impact of a crappy diet on today's kids. Mountain Dew is NOT a food group, and believe it or not, the impact of a diet full of soda / fast food contributes to a lot of these symptoms listed.
