At least ours has been climbing slowly up and up rather than a massive jump.. I can get it at $1.28/L in my little community (we have the lowest prices in the city I believe) so I feel fortunate.... that would be about $5.12/G... (mostly around $1.34 everywhere else in the city)and I kid you not, I am a 10 minute drive from a frickin refinery, you can see the flame from it from the street... the gas comes from our province!! $#@#ing government taxing the bejesus out of it
Its not the government, yes we all see the stickers the gas stations put on the pumps claiming they make 1% profits. The truth of the matter is one the price of gas is inflated, during each step of production. What oil companies do is drill and extract, then ship, then refine, several times, ship, and then sell to the consume, but in each step they sell the product within the company using subsidiary companies. So shell drilling sells the product to shell refining, which then and then to Shell, and they sell it at that 1% markup. But the markups are passed back to the consumer, so when they tell you that 50% of gas prices is taxes and 49% on the cost of gas, in reality they inflate their costs which is passed back on to the consumer. The other problem is if you compare the US to Canada they have 10x as many people and probably 10x as many cars. They have a higher demand in the US. The problem isn't the government its oil companies making record breaking profits because as long as we keep buying they keep raising their prices.
When long weekends roll around you see the gas prices increase due to the holiday, but oil production does not slow down in Saudi Arabia due to a holiday in Canada. Its because the oil companies know long weekends people drive, and if they drive they have to fill up, its a great time to bump the prices up 10 cents a liter. You could argue that the taxes are high but Gas along with Alcohol are sin taxes, we do not really need them and the taxes pay for road maintenance. But yes I understand why should you pay for stuff that is manufactured in Alberta?
