i'm not one for immicks, but driving my 1995 nissan 200sx with regular vs premium took me from turtle slow to just.. well slow.. but again, when running the airconditioner while accelerating on the highway, that's when i noticed the biggest differneces.. I mean, you gotta understandm the GA16DE engine was a weak P.O.S. 115 hp engine.... so the difference was substantial!

? Am I reading this correctly? The higher the octane, the more resistant the fuel is to detonation... so under the same conditions, premium is less likely to detonate when compared to regular.

However, the bizzaro version is true for the 3.5's and regular.

Correct. The higher the octane rating, the more resistant is the liquid to detonation.

From an engineering standpoint, the impression of "feeling more power" does not come into play, as only provable facts are regarded.

The idea that power output or fuel mileage can be improved by burning higher octane fuel than a particular engine was designed for - is wrong.

Here is an article from last year during the gas crisis

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/....html

here's a quote from the principal Engineer of the auto club of California

When choosing what grade of gasoline to use, Steve Mazor, principal auto engineer for the Auto Club of Southern California, said it is important to read the owner's manual carefully. The key is to figure out whether premium gasoline is "required" or "recommended." If it is recommended then a driver could opt to use a lower grade of gas, if they were willing to accept slightly reduced performance and fuel economy.

Call him up and tell him that he's wrong...

Other reports have reported that using lower grade fuel could decrease 0-60 times by as much as a half a second... maybe you and your limited experience with cars won't notice 1/2 second loss in a 0-60, but most of us here will, especially the 3.5 drivers...

the only consensus I've read on the subject is that putting regular in a car in which premium is only recommened will not HURT the engine, but it will affect performance, both via acceleration and fuel economy

Post more facts and less opinions guised as facts, and you'll get less responses like this one!

DAAN is saying that putting premium in the 2.5 will less likely cause detonation, where as the opposite is true for regular in the 3.5.

He isn't saying putting regular in your 3.5 is ok, that being said, I would disagree with one one point about putting premium gas in a 2.5, and thats there is less additives in premium gas and that's less crap in your engine.

It's actually the other way around - most gas stations use more additives and detergents in their premium fuels, aimed at cleaning the engine out.

My opinion : No need for premium in 2.5 / Regular drivers do not notice a difference.

^IQ and typing skills are not related - you would still post

Official publications : such as the findings of the US Federal Trade Commision : "[...]Using a higher octane gasoline than your owner's manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit.

[...] if you use regular in a premium engine, the power loss is slight, most drivers can't tell."
