Gas cap question

I'm leaving for vacation and will have to leave my Rogue outside for 2 weeks. I hate that it does not have a lockable gas cap, so I bought one. Question - can the tethered factory cap be easily removed without cutting the connection cable so I can use the new cap and then reinstall the original one?

Usually the big end (around the gas cap) can be easily slipped off. Of course this leaves the plastic tether hanging there, but the opposite end is held with a plastic snap that will likely break if you try to remove it.

FYI: Other members have had issues with aftermarket locking gas caps that seem to never seal as good as OEM. Usually this results in a check engine light but does not affect driveability. It seems hit or miss... some have problems others don't. Read more here:

Yeah that's why after I bought mine Stant Lock Key Gas Cap I never use it because of the engine light came up issue. I want to get rid of mine if anyone's interest.
