For those of us either living with our parents or living in apartments. Where are some good places to work on our cars without them getting towed by angry office people (which has happened to me) or you have no room in your parents garage because they are pack rats.( also personal expirience.)

I have heard of being able to rent out a storage space
If you are in some sort of auto school you can do it there

thats all i can think of.
so basically, lets list all of the places we have or can potentially swap an engine. both legal and illegal places are welcome.

i used to work at the bottom of the parking garage... the cop would come and say hi to us... tell us to buy cars that WORKED... but for the most part they just made sure we cleaned everything up and we were welcome to work down there

I work on my car in the driveway. Ive only received two warnings by my county, both at the same time... One for having the car on jackstands and the other for storing an inoperable vehicle in my yard. I just lowered it back on tires the next day and the case was dropped.

I live in a house that has no garage (lame, I know).

Make friends with someone with a nice big out building, then get them to let you keep your uggy race car and all that goes with it inside for years on end.

Its working great for me.

I've had luck with always letting the apartment mgm't or landlord know up front that I intend to preform my own vehicle maintenance and wash my car on a regular basis. Also promised is that in the rare occasion that I make a mess, it will promptly be cleaned up and made to look as if I was never there. So far, so good; even in apartment complexes.

However, for parts cars and long term projects, check your local Craigslist under garages/storage and you'll usually find stalls and space for ~$100/month. Not shabby if you're doing an engine swap and need a safe, secure place.
