Hey guys, it's been a while. I took a foray into motorcycles and just picked back up on the VH swap.

I got my rear sump pickup tube fabricated last week, but I'm worried about the [lack of] clearance between the mouth of the pickup tube and the bottom of the pan. Can anyone who has their oil pan off grab this measurement for me?

All you have to do is measure how deep the lowest part of the sump is, then measure how far the height of the pickup tube from the bottom of the block.

I would really appreciate it!

Thats a good question though as long as there is at least 15mm clearance I would think that would be fine. If anyone could post up the actual clearance that would be great. Will def help with my rear sump build when I get around to it. I guess my thoughts would be that the lower the better as long as its not going to adversly effect oil pick up as then you run less chance of sucking in straight air in corners etc. Got any pics of your sump pan? I'd love to see how people are setting up their baffles etc.

Here is a random question to tack onto your original question, is there any benifit in enlargint the pickup line or the mouth? I remember mettler saying it was around 10mm by 30mm mouth area in the pick up, would opening this up into just a funnel have any effect on the engine and oil pick up?

just a quick thought for you guys. my friend killed a motor by hitting the oil pan and pressing it up against the pickup. his fix, he globed a weld tit on either side of the pickup so the pan could not stop the flow if it happened again.

may not be fancy, but it might just save your a$$!

Anybody got any statistical input on the measurement? Come on, I know some of you guys have motors apart, and I've got to know this before I can continue.

I don't see any problem with the standard pickup... try and avoid driving it like the general lee & avoid bottoming out your car and you should be fine

But I wanna general Lee, in the show/movie it never does any damage to the car or suspension so it will be like that in real life :P

The situation is that I have my rear sump pan and pickup tube made, so I no longer have a standard VH pickup tube or pan to get an idea of what kind of measurement I should have.

My modified stuff only has <.5" gap between the pickup and the pan. I want to know what the gap between the FACTORY pickup tube and pan are so that if there's a drastic difference I can modify mine so I don't run into any intake, or other, issues.

I was talking to a mate yesterday that had put a VH into a jetboat and was having oil pressure problems at high revs and that was caused by the pick up being to close to the pan. Not sure how close but he cut notches in the side of the pick and that solved the problem.

Not a VH but I know the factory pickup to pan clearance in a 1UZ is in the 25-35mm range. Surely someone with a VH can measure it up for him?

Update:

On a Z32 the measurement appears to be only 3/16"! No wonder people have so much trouble with oil starvation with dented oil pans!

Here's all somebody with a VH would have to do to REALLY help me out...

Oil pickup is how tall (lay something across the block, measure to highest point of pickup tube)?

Oil pan is how deep?
