I'm replacing the entire bose system real soon and I need some help on what to do with the front speakers. What size are you guys running? It looks like the factory enclosures will need some serious cutting to fit any other speakers in them. So what is the ideal size speaker to run in the doors? Also, my car is a 93' and I wanted to put the pillar speakers from a 94-96 in. Anyone done this to thier 90-93?

My entire Bose system was replaced, and with a custom fabricated panel we managed to fit a 6" speaker and a 4" speaker into the cavity and covered it up with the factory door trim.

The tweeter was mounted on the mirror thingy.

Aside from the tweeter, it looks no different to a stock door, but packs a large amount of grunt.

Yeah i know, but the thing is I don't drive my car all that much, I have another car and a motorcycle. But since its winter I've been driving the q everyday and I've had it with the bose.

I took some semi-step by step pics of what I did to mount some 6.5" drivers into my stock front door bose enclosures... I basically cut out the front face and made a fiberboard baffle/mounting board to cover the front of the enclosure, with a hole cut to fit the woofer. Since the surface of that front panel is not perfectly flat (there's some dips etc.), I made a back side baffle also over the bottom part of the enclosure, to sandwich the front panel. Then all gaps were gooped up, and the speaker mounted, and that was that.

Wow man nice work! That looks great, I bet those sound awesome. I'm going to try something like that, I might go to the junkyard and pick up a 2nd pair of enclosures in case I ruin on of mine!

Hmmm, I had forgotten to take pics of the tweeter install.. but it was pretty basic, esp if you have, or can get a hold of a whole kouki Q45's tweeter assembly and pillar... the stock tweeter is held to the pillar by a metal bracket with a ring... you can remove the stock tweeter and mount your aftermarket one in its place. In my case I just used some hot glue and it's been fine and dandy for the last.. 2.5 years or so. I'll try to take some pics soon as I'm about to go through the system again...Oh yeah, and this may sound like common sense, but if you're gonna go through all this trouble, i'd highly recommend getting some goooood speakers to go along with all your custom work. It'll definitely be worth it...!

Any chance i could get some details about this. Did you splice the 4" ers into the 6" ers speaker wires? Did you reuse any of your Original wires?I like the sound of this, I had been looking at that space wondering if I could put something there and asking myself WOULD IT SOUND BAFFLED? What would you say about sound quality?

out of utter laziness (and cuz I wanted to finish the whole project in a couple hours so I could enjoy the new speakers before nightfall), I did just use the oem wiring harnesses. What I didn't show in those pics is that I mounted my aftermarket crossovers inside the enclosures also, and ran my amp's outputs to the wires leading to the original bose amps from behind the factory deck. The crossovers' woofer outputs then go to the drivers in the same enclosure, and then their tweeter outputs go back out and up the pillar, all using the oem wiring. It worked fine, but I'm about to gut that setup and relocate the crossovers to behind the center console, and run new, thicker gauge speaker wire all around. Sound quality was very good imo.. it does help as I mentioned to splurge a little and get some good speakers... in my case, I bit the bullet and got some focal drivers, and boston acoustics xovers. I can not stress enough how awesome the Focals sound... they were so good I just recently had to get a pair of focal 6x9s for the rears for the car's upcoming audio makeover. If you do end up keeping the bose enclosures as I did, I think it will only help with the sound quality, as most people usually just stuff a speaker into their door panel and let the rear sorta hang out free-air style with no real separation between the front and rear, and that's definitely not the most ideal setup...

Oh, one thing to consider is speaker mounting depth.. I forgot how deep the box is, but you'll ideally want to get a driver that will fit inside there. I was lucky that I had room to sorta wedge the xover to one corner, and then still fit the woofer in there... but I know a lot of newer, $$$ speakers have huge, deep magnet structures that prob won't fit into the bose enclosure too well...

Did you gut the bottom portion of the pod removing all these raised portions? I did that because i didn't plan to reuse the top portion like you did and needed the depth. I ran into a problem w/ the adaptor plate i made being to wide to fit properly. So I'll be recutting this weekend.

Do you think 6.5" will fit your setup, from the looks of it, your 6"ers are snug w/ not much room left to cut?
