I have a 1993 q45, and both my front speakers are blown and sound like ***. I looked on crutchfield's website and best buy's website, they didn't have a listing for front speakers. All they list are the rear. What kind of speakers are you guys running? I can't find anything.

I believe 5 1/4 are an exact fit but 6 1/2 will also fit with minor mods. the speaker depth should be looked at carefully too! i think if you talk to a rep from crutchfield over the phone,,they can give you more info. not sure if you're aware of this, but the bose system has powered speakers (the amp is attached to the speaker) which means you can't just buy a pioneer etc. speaker and pop it in (the head unit doesn't put out any power). if you want to keep everything stock (bose), you can search around here or on ebay for people selling their working speakers or pay to have the amp fixed/replaced. i know it's a pain!!!!

IMHO crutchfield can't be beat for their customer service, how-to, over the phone help and their free install guides, but, if you kinda know what you're doing and know the exact item you want, you can save a TON of money by checking out other sites on the net, esp. EBAY.

More than often it's the AMP that is the problem and not the speaker. I gutted the entire system.

I can sell you my old front speakers cheap. Both were working fine at the time of removal (I can even test them again). This is just the speakers, not the enclosure as I have installed free air 6.5 speakers and sawed the back off the enclosures.

Maybe not worth it for everyone but I gutted all the Bose stuff. I installed good Kenwood 6"x9's in the rear (simple bolt-in) and the same speakers in the front doors. I built up custom mounting plates with spacers and they fit behind the OEM grilles just perfectly. I had to trim some of the cardboard on the door panels and some of the plastic on the back of the grille area. Everyone who hears them is amazed and it still sounds perfect after 3 years. I had too many issues with the Bose system and gave it all to DougQ45 for spare parts. I could have installed 6.5's in the front much easily but nothing is easy on a Q right?

just a bit of info, im a system installer and tried all kinds of setups in my q. i actually went back to bose but crossed out the amps and used my own. guys the clairity and quality of this way is incredible. i was so shocked and no one in my shop believed these were 13 year old speakers. i made my own enclosures for the rear. also putting after market speakers in the door leaves them open to water damage, as water will always get inside the door from the window. dont knock the bose. im using a 4 chan punch 240 as well as fosgate symetry, these could be sound quality factors but there is very little distortion. but i also have little to no bass going to my highs, its all comin from the rear. hope this helps a little.

So you're saying that you installed 6x9's in your front door?

Please give more details here...

I assume you kept the OEM bose head unit? If you don't mind, can you write up your install? It would be great for us OEM look guys.

Thanks!!!

I did the same thing. I recently bypassed my bose amps and I am just using my headunit amplification and it sounds soooo much better. I do however need new rear speakers cause my ghetto rig glue and paper is falling apart again.

.:Edit:. and no you can not use the stock headunit as it provides 0 amplification which is bose's signature technology. This is for aftermarket headunits only.

wow this is an oldie!

no i did not use the oem headunit, but i did do something cool.

i removed the ashtray and put the heater control in its place. only took some slight dremel strokes, and put the head unit in its place. looks stock, but then you have to deal with the hole in the center. i flush mounted my symetry there. you could put a tv or nav, anything and it will look good if your good! id post a pic, but i cant. i know theyre on here somewhere, probably in archived

thats when i just finished putting it in. it looks alot nicer now that ive taken care of some of the gap issues. id really like to remove the symetry, put a 7" monitor there and have it fold up to reveal the symetry. but thats down the road.$$$
