I know they're a touch tall (3%), but the 245/45 Dunlop Maxx is a good tire for $121 each.
That 's why I am wondering about the price, and the fact I cannnot document that offset.

Maxx are OK, but not great. History of Dunlop on G50 would mamke me shy away. I would try the Tech 500 for a cheapy tire.

Avons are on my list, and yes I'm "cheap" on tires, but I only use them for ~10k, then you're into the hardened rubber and I'd rather replace ... I'm sure buying better tires would give me longer/more "good rubber" for the same (or better) price per mile ... but I'm hard headed.

To "confirm" the +42 pricing difference ...

From your link aboveClick the "Return to Search results" arrow on the upper leftFrom there select the non-highlighted 18x9 to the left of the 2 "blue high-lighted" 18x9'sNow click the BBS RGR link on the left "column" that will show you the 18x9 +42 for $689 as a rear fitment, paired with the 18x8 +40 @ $655.

Yeah, but see the 2 to the right of the special price per 2.) in my post above. They are black diamond finish and not on special.

how about aftermarket '05+ mustang wheels? The Bullet and FR500 wheels can be had in 17x9 with 45mm backspace. Would that work? Would they need a small spacer (like 5/16" or so)?

Yes, and if you follow my steps listed above, but click either of the 18x9's listed to the right you get to the same information "18x9 +42 Black Diamond $689".

In short 18x9 +42 $689, 18x9 +35 $369 ... good for us.

The only issue I can recall was a(n under-rated) Dunlop that blew out and sent a guy into a guard rail .. has there been more safety issues?

That was a Yokohama 420 from discount tires, truly worse than even a Dunlop.

Dunlops were one OEM specified tire on the 1994 G50, but were all recalled in a TSB because they couldn't handle the front end stresses. Infiniti had to return to the Michelin XGTV series 215/65-15 the next year.

Ok, I have only found the factory 17x8 '05+ mustang wheels in the 42mm backspace. Aftermarket FR500 18x9 wheels are 36mm backspace. I guess these will at least fit the back with the 255/40-18 tires. Will that also fit on the front? This would be for a G50.

If it has the correct bolt circle and hub centering ring, it might.

bolt pattern is correct 5x4.5" (5x114) and hub opening is 70.5mm. Hub centric rings are gonna be somewhat hard to find.
