The red hose is the return while the black is the outlet.

The fuel pump for the 89-90 is the same as the 91-98 fuel pump.

then why is the red hose seem to be not needed or shown on any of the writeups. My problem is that i am not using an aftermarket pump replcement it is an oem and it didn't want to come off the oem pump out of my buddy's 89 that i replaced with an airtex. I would have got a walbro but for 75 bucks brand new you can't beat the oem reliability. I assumed it was a return or backfeed but is it needed?

Other than being clueless myself, the best thing I may be able to come up with is nothing more than assumption and/or hearsay.

Give me a few days to talk with some people I know to see if they have any information that could be added.

if you find anything out let me know. I have went up and down through my fsm and my pos chilton f'n combo manual that is the biggest worthless book i have read on a 240 yet, with no luck on explanation or it even being there. If i went aftermarket i wouldn't care but 75 bucks for a $300 oem pump it was too good to pass up.

i haven't started on mine yet. Te one in the pic is out of my buddy's 89. That is what happens when your car sits for 8 years with old gas. The sad thing is he knew better. In the pic you can see where it was broke off. I tried to remove it and it was not happening.

Okay, my friends and I have all came to the same conclusion. Coincidently your thoughts are along the same line.

The red hose is not going to be on all of the fuel pumps and certainly is not needed.

With that said, it does not connect to anything nor will it ever connect to anything. Plus I need to correct myself, the red tube is a breather tube rather than a return line as i had previously stated. Why some the tube is there is unimportant in light of the fact that it is no longer be added to current fuel pumps going into the 89-98 240sx.

For the sake of those wondering the fuel pump more than likely went to another model car and/or was a cheap after market fuel pump a former owner had installed.

All in all, do not worry about the red line.

I hope I have answered the question adequately.
