Fuel Pump Beer can cooler thing: is it important?

Car: 1989 240SX SE fastback with CAI, CD Player

I just changed out the (NAPA) fuel pump in my 1989 240SX and I forgot to put on the beer can cooler sleeve thing. The car runs fine (full tank of gas).

What is it, and should I crack the tank to put it on, or can I leave it off?

you will run out of gas before you get below a quarter tank, also, there is nothing filtering the fuel going into the pump. Both are bad JuJu, put it on.
