LOL.I ment after you fix hte altinator see how things work before you change anything else to see if a dying altinator is hte cause of the problem.

At one point Autozone was willing to sell us an altinator for around $100. We went to the junk yard insted.

Good Luck.

alright sounds good but i think it maybe the problem with egr cause while changing the alternator there were no plugs or vacum lines on the egr thingy next to the intake manifold

check the mass sensor connection if its loose or corroded it will do that but nissan sucks for having the fuel cutoff and a speed gov on the 240s

I have something similar.

Speedometer dies, fuel cut issue arises sometimes, but not others.

I'm replacing the speedometer with a known working unit to see if it speedometer related or somewhere else.

my car does the same thing, but when the fuel has been cut and i start slowing down, when i let off the gas it sounds like im engine braking but when i push the gas is sounds more like everything is running at the same speed (not accelerating, not slowing just holding pace) i have been able to break the fuel cut or limiter, as soon as i hit it i push in the cluch and when it drops below 3k i let it out and accelerate, i can make it to about 5 to 10 mph faster than the first cut before it does it again or sometimes it doesnt cut again and accelerates just fine till i hit the 115 speed limiter

It seams that this problem is more wide spread than orginaly thought. It is almost as if once the car reaches a certan age it happens.

Am I correct in thinking that this is primarily a SOHC problem?

I think most people "fix" it by swapping to either a tuned ECU or another engine.

Has anybody tried a NEW Distributor and if so what effect did it have?

It has to be a part that is affected by age.

I have been tracking this problem for over a year trying to fix our race car. tThere are other threads covering similar problem.

This thread is by far the best so far. The only one that appears to have narrowed it down to a speed/rpm govener kicking in.

I hate covering up a problem (putting in a tunned ecu) when we should be able to find the root cause and FIX it.

I noticed my speedometer dies, and the place where I've had the most incidents of the limp/cut-off is when I go around an uphill right hand turn. It's a hill near my place that feeds off a highway...so your carrying speed around this tight right hander as you go up the hill.

For some reason my car's speedometer always flickers for a second there, and sometimes it'll limp/cut-off shortly after.

there is a possibility that the hill is along with the turn making your car rub through your wire harness

the 89-90 240s have a problem with the fuel cut off/speedlimiter to keep us fromblowin them up but since i put in my chipped ecu i dont have a speed limiter, or fuel cut off but my ecu also has an more aggressive fuel map .ive beatn my friend with a de a few times taken my car all the way to 8grand well past the 6500 redline but i also have a lot of stuff done 2 my motor

o damn thats a lil expensive ugh i have a new theory on what might be the problem and i think its the egr becuase i just found out that its not hooked up and not pluged so im thinking that might be the problem.

as for my slows13 idk maybe if you can tell us a lil more about your car we can help becuase there is a number of things that could be making run in limp mode but thing you can try is just resetting the ecu by leaving you batterie dissconnected over night and see what happens from there

I am sure swaping the ECU will prevent any RPM or Speed govenor from kicking in. The problem is that all of us that are having this problem had cars that would run fine all the way up to 6500 in any gear (except 4000 in 5th) and 115MPH all day long 24/7.

Then something changed. Now we can only go to about 4000 - 4500 in any gear. And no where near 115MPH.

Cutting the wires for the 5th gear and speed sensor do nothing. The OP of this thread can trace down to the day that the problem started. This is not a unique problem either. A number of us suffer from it.

Does anybody have a scematic of the INTERNAL working of the ECU? I would bet that there is a weak part that has failed and eventualy will fail in all ECUs of this era.

In my case I CAN'T swap to a re-done ECU. It is not allowed at our track. I MUST remain stock. I can repair as needed but can not upgrade. Eventualy I am sure we will figure it out.
