Not really competitive (it has the torsen as well, so it's in the same class as your R package, but weighs more), but we race her Dad's Mazdaspeed Protege, so it works out alright.
I could never own one, as I HATE driving it for more than an autoX distance, but I'm over 6' tall and I just can't get comfortable in it.
Thanks!
I forgot you're one of the few autocrossers on here.

I
really like this car... in stock form it's really amazing for what it is.
I was looking at M editions too as those are the only Miatas that are guaranteed to have the torsens (otherwise they have to be the popular equipment package). I was doing a lot of calling to Mazda NA to run VIN#'s on Miatas I found online. The extra weight of the M was negligible to me (I looked up that it's 50lbs more than the R) and I'm only 5'3 anyway.

The extra creature comforts would have been nice as this is my daily (yes, I'm insane). All the M-editions I kept finding were either beat to hell or higher mileage than I wanted. As far as comfort goes, I drove it for 2 hrs on the highway around 85mph on the way home and I wasn't bothered by the engine noise and the seat was decent. My commute is just local roads and it's a short one at that.
One day when the prices come down on the NC, I'll get one of those. :P
