my coworker and i are having a debate. (we both have extensive experience working in high-end custom wheel/tire shops). i feel as though there are 3 reasons to put wheels/tires on a vehicle...enhance vehicle looks, improve performance, & differentiate it from the others like it. working on that theory, don't we as customizers miss the mark if all of the vehicles we produce look just like others of the same vein? IE...i like parts of the VIP style movement, but are we really "customizing" if all the y33's look like clones of each other? i read a thread that someone posted a week or so ago about whether we were pushing the envelope enough on these cars & i dismissed it initially. i'm beginning to rethink my posture. don't get me wrong, i like VIP styling, i just feel like we can push our look beyond only what the JDM market has done with this car. i simply want my car to outshine a Japanese version of a 64 Impala on switches w/Work wheels. i guess the only drawback to my theory is part availability, but hey, necessity is the mother of invention!

opinions?

Maybe I just dont get it,but the slammed,over-cambered tilted in at the top look of wheel/tire packages just look retarded and defective to me-looks like **** to be truthful....

unless your willing to do the work yourself, including some serious fabrication, your car is going to have an evil twin somewhere in the world (unless you drive a 1 in 100 million car or something)

qship96, I agree 100%. That whole camber or having the wheels stick out of the car looks like somebody hit a speed bump at 100mph, or had a truck tie a chain around the wheel and floored it... thats what they look like to me

No offense to antbo, the car is beautiful but I rather go OEM or lower quality to get rid of that look. Even PMF's is too 'extreme' (or subtle to those of you that enjoy it, which seems to be the majority) for my tastes. Nothing like wasting a great tire because you wanted to look k0o| . Still every car in this thread outshines mine, and out shined it before the accident. I just cant make a giant belt buckle look sweet, unless you park next to a jag owner and he falls all over himself wondering what it is

I do agree with both cccpman and qship96 about the camber.... but with my new suspension i think it is straightened out...

it is my daily driver- so i do prefer that as much of that tire is in contact with the ground as much as possible....

Antbo- honestly I love the front end of your car... it is one of the best i have seen in a while, but how does your car ride at that height? are you on air?

Yes Ant is on airrunners. And Unless you are driving with a damn near solid suspension you will have more tire on the road under hard cornering with negative camber. Even F1 cars run negative camber.

Really? I never really thought about that... but I am sure you know more about this than I do... for conditions other than hard cornering- would a negative camber be better?

In reality, the only negative to REASONABLE negative camber is tire wear, too much camber can cause handling to decrease significantly, but with a multilink rear suspension, when airride is raised up some, depending on how high car is raised at that moment, the wheels will tilt back to proper camber. When I had my GTI, I ran negative camber in the front for better cornering and it helped a ton, even on one of the worst factory designed suspensions of all time.

Tastes in looks are all subjective, I am building custom airride right now for my q and it will have a decent amount of negative camber, but my car is a city goer and attempting to tune a 5000 lb sedan for cornering seems like a lost cause to me.

i happen to agree with gjh20 i like the vip style alot but i think that the q owner should be able to modify his or her car to their liking without having to follow the same trend everyone else is doing

i here your guy's aspect on modding, but where else in the states will you see a car like mine??? you tell me. theres prob off the top of my head like 6 of us that have a VIPstyled Y33 in the states, at least my kit and wheels are one off. fixing up cars is a trend period. i dont know why it seems that you guys are pointing your fingers at VIP.

yeah, i dont see the friendly challenge here. you didnt here me talking about the style of your car.

Well, there is about to be another VIP y33 in the sates here this winter....

And for all the haters, I will gladly let them hate. I will not make a public mockery of someone elses style until they attempt to mine.

obviously the other few VIP style guys out there aren't as sensitive...apparently they'll flame on site!

i still want this to be friendly guys. there's nothing "wrong" with VIP styling if that's your thing. i just really like seeing individuality in our work. No offense, but 6 other cars in the States that look exactly like mine is 6 too many.

still though, i think theres like 100+ people that have your wheels and the same style your going for. i see a lot off peeps smoking there tails, head lights and drop springs here in SD. think about that like i said modding cars is a trend DUB or VIP whatever it is. someone has done it, unless you do a Q45 donk. but i bet thats been done already. why dont you just mod your Q to sail on water J/P!!!

we're falling off into semantics. i know my wheels are semi-mass produced. the cost keep them from being overexposed. the key is all in application. as you said, you haven't seen them on a Q. that matters. surely none of us think a kit & wheels or springs & smoked lights is new or innovative. the combination of mods & how they are applied/executed makes the difference in a wanna be Pep Boys ad car & a true work of art. like i said Antbo, i like your whip. i like all that have been posted (not all for me, but still nice). as crazy as it sounds, I'M ON YOUR TEAM! it IS still friendly, nothing wrong with a healthy debate.

I know there are hardly any y33 owners left because all of the y33's that are still on the road have 200+ miles on them and the parts are hard to get - as far as customizing the car to achieve the tiled wheel stance/camber look and squeeze 10" wide rims into the wheel well that was flared with a baseball bat - I am not crazy about the look -
Agreed - Stance is one thing - over-engineering a suspension to achive this un-natural look - (yes I have seen the Video's from Japan) it just doesn't do anything for the car - IMHO.
