I've noticed that on older Maximas, some of them have a clear sticker on the rear side windows that say "FDSC" with "Four Door Sports Car" printed underneath.

I think this is pretty cool...and I'm wondering if it's a factory thing. I've noticed it on two different Maximas of the same generation, so I was figuring it's a commonplace thing but was still curious about it.

Hell yeah. I'd love an older 5-speed Maxima as a daily driver. I'd probably be too tempted to mess with it though, thus defeating the purpose of a "beater".

Oh well. :)

tino- don't think that they we're referring to it's classification by insurance companies, which would be a sedan or saloon.

all things considered, they have as much of a right to be considered a sport car as most, and well...

ever heard of a wrx or a lancer?

personally I like the designation "sport sedan" or touring sedan, but...oh well.

Yes, it's a factory thing. I believe it was on all 3rd gen maximas. I had a 91 4DSC.. with the stickers.. just sold it last week.

damn right 4 doors is not a sports car.... if it has back seats it's not a sports car...

the Lancer Evolution is nowhere near being a sports car..... fast and "sporty" do not a sports car make....

more than 2 doors (not including the hatch if it's a hatchback) = not a sports car.. more than 3 seats = not a sports car....FWD = not a sports car 99.93% of the time... (i might let the M100 Elan and CRX slip by... at least the elan....)

M3 coupe = GT car..M3 sedan = sports sedanPorsche 911 = GT car (NOT sports car)

Sports Sedan at best... but still wrong wheel drive....

it's very simple... flame away if you like i really don't care...

NOW I GO FISHING

TO THE MOUNTAINTOP WITH MY EVO!

goddammit, if it wins rally championships, I don't care how many doors it has, be it WRX, EVO or ur mamas taurus, it better be considered a sports car, cuz rally is a MOTOR SPORT...and any participants ar there fore....SPORTScars.... tony u annoy me...but in a good way. don't worry, be happy and drive a WRX STi or 911 GT2... then tell me if u didn't think it was a sportly experience.

Nissan had a big ad campaign in '89-90 labelling the Maxima a 4-door sports car because of its motor (hot 6 cyl like the Z). Is a 4 door technically a sports car? No. Can a 4 door handle like a sports car? You betcha. Here are a couple of 4 door cars that handle like sports cars:

Subaru WRXAudi S6, RS6, S4 Avant.

Ferrari 456GT. Sports Car. With a back seat.

Camaro SS. Sports Car. With a back seat.

Saleen GT. Sports Car. With a back seat.

Porsche 944. Sports Car. With a back seat.

240SX. Economy Car. Back seat irrelevant. :rolleyes

what is the definition of a sports car??? i always of a performance oriented 2dr car, irregardless or wheather it has a back seat... camaros, novas, and chevelles are considered sportscars and have backseats... (try telling your insurance co. your SS isnt a sports car) Typically id tend to picture a "sports car" as a 2dr car, although Lancers, and Wrxs cannot be ingnored, hell in japan they even have 4dr skylines... a 4 door car being called a sports sedan if fitting, although when was the last time you saw a sedan that wasnt a car??? hahaha boggle your minds....

Definition of a sports car? Good question. Depends who you talk to. Traditionally, a sports car is a two-seat car who's main purpose is performance AND handling more so than comfort, luggage room.

I wouldn't believe a car manufacturer's definition for sports car. Ford will stick an ugly wing on a Topaz and call it a breakthrough sports car. GM will slap on some decals on a Cavalier and call it a Z24.

Most automags categorize sporting cars similarly. I may get flamed for posting one in a wrong category but here's how I think they'd classify the cars listed so far. :

Pony:Mustang, Camaro (not sports cars)

Muscle:Chevelle, Nova SS

Sporty coupe:240sx (sorry), Probe, Prelude, Eclipse

GT (Grand Turismo)FerrariPorsche 911/928M5

Sports car:Porsche944CorvetteMiataBMW Z3Audi TT

Sedan:Maxima626AccordBMW 3 seriesAltima

Sport Sedan:M3S4

any "sports car" with a back seat is straight up a sport coupe including the 300zx 2+2's the 300zx's with out the back seat is a true sports car

Is a sedan not a car?

So Tino.......You wouldn't consider the BMW M5 a sports car cause it has 4 doors. The WRX has a lot of potentional as well.

WHO CARES!! The classifications of a car are irrelevant...keep it simple...there are two types of vehicles, those which are faster than yours, and those that are slower.

It all depends upon whether you want to consider the dogmatic classifications probably created before you were born by muscle car manufacturers or the like, or the working definitions based upon whether the car has the potential to handle well and drive quickly.

In my opinion all porsches and ferrari's are sports cars, as well as:the wrxlancer evo's 240's etc...

cavaliers and us spec lancers should be simply categorized as sh1t.

oh yeah, redrocket-learn how to punctuate, when I read your post I felt like I was listening to someone who had only one breath to use for each sentence.

I hate it when people type like this and don't puncuate they make me feel like I'm going to explode because they never stop the flow of reading because they never give you anywhere to stop

dude, how is a 911 not a sports car, but a WRX is? bull****. the WRX is a toy.

sports car:Ferrari F40.

-chetPorsche944-maybe.Corvette-HELL ****ING NO. its a overglorified muscle car. period(like the viper)Miata-roadsterBMW Z3-see aboveAudi TT-uh...GAY? audi TT isnt really anything but a "toy" car, almost fast, almost fun...all girl car.

and how do you figure a ferrari 360 modena, with a chasis producign 400lbs of downforce at 100mph as a "GT" car? its a sports car, there "bubba", the 550 maranello is ferrari's GT.

*a sports car is a car that can be dirven "for sport" on a track, while remaining street legal, or in street trim.*
