I was hanging out at an Impreza meet with my friends and I walked away to talk on my phone for a bit and when i return my friends are sitting in my car and have my hood popped. I knew I locked the car so when I went to figure out what happened my friend showed me his Impreza key. Basically without much effort he was able to open my car and then later start it with his Impreza key. Then we tried to do the same with my brothers Altima key and sure enough it worked without a hitch. How hard would it be to change the door locks, trunck lock and ignition? and where could I go to get it done?

I forgot to mention that we were also able to do the same thing to my friends '90 fastback so I dont think that its just my car. There was a lot more trouble starting his car though.

that's strange that ANY other key would work at all, let alone a subaru key??

Most people who work on a wide selection of cars will tell you a story about the time they unlocked and started a customer's car with the wrong set of keys. I've done this many times... on anything from slightly older Fords, Honda, Toyotas, and Nissans. Newer cars don't really suffer from this problem, but if you're in a parking lot with 3 similar slightly older make/model automobile, and you just so happen to go to the wrong car, chances are you can unlock and start the car.

Guys, this isn't news. You want to keep your car from getting stolen, try this:

1. forget about body kits, personal plates, and big wheels2. park in your garage and lock the car and the house.

Safety isn't real. Any motivated thief can take your car at any time.

Does any know how many lock set combos nissan has. I know that chevy has like 28 and ford has thirty something. Im just currious because i work at a ford and toyota dealership and we have a key ring that has all the lock combos incase someone locks their keys in their car or something.later

wow..that's good to know...

and yea parking it in the garage only applies to those who live in houses or duplex....

for those who live in apartments........ i'd say keyless entry with a new lock..

I have found driving beaters helps with vehicle retention. If they only knew the goodies under than hazy, dented hood;)

I heard about different keys working on different cars. Such as civics with vin numbers that were close enough could open each others cars etc. So I tried my Nissan truck key which looks just like my 240's key and no worky for me. But, that is pretty crazy that they got into your subbie so easily..

Thats the thing, I dont have a Subbie. I have a '93 240 Coupe and they still got into it with a Subbie key.

i must be lucky, my 180sx key or sentra key wont open or start my 240. go me! of course, this doesnt change the fact that a friggin ****er spaniel could break into my car, since it has frameless doors. just do what i do and dont park anywhere that it could be broken into or stolen. when i go somewhere i park my cars in my friends' driveways and garages, and even then i lock it and take the faceplate and remote for the stereo with me. yes, i know, im paranoid, but i had a good 7-10 grand worth of stuff stolen from my car a while back (stereo, laptop, 10 copies of windows 2k, cell phone, wallet, MY SUNFLOWER SEEDS, backpack with all my school books and notebooks (the day before my final exams started, too.)

Hey Forsaken,

Nissan will sell you a complete lock set that includes glove box, doors, ignition and trunk for $138 and some change. If you purchased than seperately, it costs something like $380.........no joke!

I plan on buying the set next month after my second payday because all of my locks have a lot of wiggle room and play........not to mention I have the original key and it seems impossible to make a copy of it because it's basically a straight piece of metal with a few gouges in it!!!

Hope that helps.

didn't read the whole thread, but if somebody failed to mention, both subaru and nissan are fuji heavy industries and share a lot of common parts.... if your were to change the locks/ignition, i'd go w/ a totally different company, whoever knows about this "trick" wouldn't be expecting a 240 to have toyota locks ...

Did your insurance company compensate you for the sunflower seeds or did you actually have to go buy another pack? Man, what is this world coming to....
