I should clarify that the Maxima didn't just loose it's manual transmission option in 2007. It lost it's quite respectable 5-speed auto as well. Both were shoved aside so Ghosn could force his stupid CVT on the car.

Same here. Whether I agree or not, I enjoy talking cars.
The CTS's 3.6 liter (the LY7) did have NVH issues early on (which was unfortunate considering that the rest of the car was great). That has been resolved to my knowledge, though. And the higher-tech version of that motor, the direct-injection LLT, is one of the best motors available in the US market right now. Second only to Nissan's fantastic V6 offerings, I'd say.
Certainly if you're looking for a car to get you around that you don't have to think about much, Toyota's your brand. But cars have always been much more than transportation to me, so Toyota's transportation appliances don't do anything for me.
I am actually very interested in the new iQ from Toyota, though. I think they've done pretty much everything right with that car for the market it's designed for. It's superior to the Smart and will probably do very well. It also looks kind of like a Storm Trooper, which helps me ignore the bad Toyota styling. I'll never buy an iQ (at least, not for a decade or so) but I'll be watching it's progress closely.
