never......everevereverevereverevereverevereverevereverever

use summit brand hose fittings

EVER!

had to get towed thursday...motor is fine thank goodness i caught it....but those aren't shadows on the side of the car....6 qt's of oil FTL! when i got it home i put the fitting back on...it freespun on the hose...the damn thing expanded!! and the fitting is brand new WTF!!!!

all new earl's fittings are going on this week. i'm an advocate for "mod cheap mod twice". i should have known better and i'm still pissed at myself for getting these, but damn...i didn't think Summit of all people would have sold me crap. i figured they'd jsut rename some other brand. the good news is summit hooked me up on the earl's fittings, so i can't complain. i was kind of suprised they were willing to help out.

Damn that sucks! !! If you just bought them, call them up and complain.

Summit does just.buy those fittings from another company. But they are made cheaper, so they can sell them cheaper. Might packaging or assembly. But I doubt you can safely machine a fitting any cheaper.

I have used lots of summit fittings.

Is that a hose clamp around that braided line? I really can't see what you have going on in there.

Regardless, glad your car is okay!

Evan

Please post up the summit PN's so I can take a look. I just used a bunch more and would like to double check .

i bought them back in September, but when I talked to them they gave me a good discount on the earl's fittings and fee overnight shipping, which is more then alot of other companies would have done. So i can't complain too much

no hose clamps at all. that's just the bare end of the hose after it blew out of the fitting. here's what it looked like when i put it all in the car. the part number is sum-220890. i used 4 of those and also used 2 sum-220887. only the one went out, for now, but i am replacing them all b/c after this i just don't trust them. this isn't my first rodeo and i know they were installed properly.

Woah! Good thing you caught that before it was too late! I have quite the mix of summit, earl's, aeromotive and russel fittings and my favorite are the Earl's, no doubt.

yeah...i think the saving grace was i was not at WOT. i was only cruising around 2500. i only started it for a minute after i got it home and put some oil in it...but no odd sounds so i would assume it's ok...guess i'll know in about 100 miles! LOL i have a mix of fittings too but none like these summit fittings. even looking inside you can see how cheap and crappy they are made. i think the summits are fine for non-pressure lines, but i'll never use them for pressured lines again. Earl's is always the end all when it comes to plumbing....or hard lines! LOL

Dang! That is crazy! Did it tear the hose or anything or just basically slip out?

Thanks for the better pictures etc.. and the part numbers. I used summit fittings on my oil feed line but if I need to do anything larger Ill use earls.

no tear...just popped right out. and like i said..when i put it back on the hose the fitting just spins around. the only way i can see that happening is if the outer section of the fitting stretched. i love my motor too much...i just can't risk it and that's why i'm swapping them all. i still have summit fittings for my return line, but there's no pressure there so that should be fine.

i've assembled a few summit brand hoses before and their tolerances were really loose. kind of worried me. the part that you typically need to oil and push in&tighten (dunno the term) just seemed to push on way too easily. i guess i could see something like that happening. my summit stuff has held together but it's only being used for my catch can.

Yep they suck. I used their SS hoses and ends to build my fuel system and just about every end leaked. I had to cut the hose and use new hose ends to stop the leaks.

how long did it not have oil pressure for. Hopefully you dont have issues done the road. Clean kouki. I like the wrinkle paint/powdercoat you used on your engine bay. It really cleans it up .

the dummy light never came on and i don't have a oil pressure gauge (that's the next mod now) but i pretty much pulled over as soon as it happened. i went maybe 1/4 mile or so mostly coasting. the line that blew was on the feed side of the filter so i dunno if the motor was still pulling oil from the cooler or what.

Weird... I used Summit hose ends on my power steering for years and never had one just blow out. Way more pressure too.*shrug*

I assembled a -10 return line last night, and it went together WAY too easy. The -4 feed line was a b**** though.

Did you use summit hose or earls? I am wondering if the hose is part of the problem. I know the line I used was -4 russel, but cannot remember what size the -10 is. I bought the -10 about 10 years ago.

Very odd, but with how easy the -10 went together I sure wouldn't have used it on an oil cooler! Scary.

i used both summit hose and fittings for the oil lines. my 10 an for the oil return is summit too (haven't installed yet) but i'm not too worried about that line since there's no pressure.

i actually used 2 summit fittings on aeroquip hose and those were pretty tight. but i'm keeping a close eye on those for sure. looking down inside the out section of the summit fittings there's hardly anything to grab the hose (threads) it's more like little scratches...where earls, russel and every other fitting i've ever used has some pretty stout threads that you really have to twist onto the hose.

my feed for the turbo is crimped premade line from atp so i should be good with that!

*update....replaced ALL the fittings today on the oil lines. everything went smooth....super messy, but smooth. there was still oil in the cooler and return lines. motor seems to be ok. only time will tell.

here's some comparison pics of the two fittings...you can obviously tell the earls fitting is much beefier and the internal ridges that hold onto the hose are alot thicker and stronger.

summit fitting

earls fitting

and just to show how loose it really was. this was before i pulled the first fitting. not all were this loose. it's a lot looser then the video depicts. i could actually twist the fitting with my hands but i used the vise and wrench with one hand so i could hold my phone (camera) with the other

if you're referring to the pivoting ratcheting wrenches...then YES!!! i <3 mine and use the crap out of them...i dunno how i ever did without them. i use them more then any other tool too and there are bolts i used to spend ungodly amounts of time fighting that these take out in seconds!

I have summit fittings on my oil cooler right now, and im very happy with them (even tho I only ran them for a day). How long did these last you? Did you tighten them down like a caveman? are you sure they didn't back out during installation and cause this?

also im curious as to why you are holding the hose in the vice..?

i had the fittings on the car for about a 1000 miles before it blew. as i stated above this isn't my first rodeo....i've assembled literally hundreds if not thousands of fittings. they were assembled correctly. besides...assembly doesn't explain why the fitting SPINS on the hose now!

as for the vise...if you read what i said it was so i could hold the video camera with the other hand.
