I took my car in to Infiniti of Norwood today because my belts seemed to be acting up. Turns out that the car needs new motor mounts, new valve cover gasket, new oil pain, new right shield, and a new axle seal. DAMMIT! This is going to be ugly. But on the plus side my car will be like new when I get it back since the tech said everything else is in beautiful shape.

I do have one question though. Since they are going to be replacing the oil pan and seals, is this a good time to switch to synthetic oil since all the seals will be new?

Shouldn't be an issue either way, so now is as good a time as any. What's wrong with the oil pan - dented?

Yes, probably thanks to some pothole. But can I really switch to synthetic any time? I've heard reports of leaks from old seals after a changeover to synthetic.

It usually only happens when you use a thin synthetic oil. If you do experience leaks, I recommend going with a slightly thicker synthetic and that will fix your problem. Besides, it's getting close to spring/summer time when you want a thick oil. I'm sure our oil guru Fred will chime in. :)

So using the standard thickness oil for my car only in a synthetic form would be no problem?

Probably not, especially since they're resealing your valve covers.

Great. It needs a new oil pressure switch too, but thankfully it didn't cause any internal damage to the engine.

how much is this gonna cost you? Atleast none of the things are too major.

My personal estimate (waiting for a real one from Infiniti) is about $600-700 parts/labor.

It looks like there's 2 pieces for your oil pan, an upper and a lower one. They would run you about $100 each if you went with one of our advertisers for the parts. The motor mounts (there are 3 I believe) would run you around $200. I doubt it will be as cheap as $600 parts and labor, maybe just parts or labor.

Yeah, I kind of giggled when I read that quote. Even for a G20, it sounds like 4 figures at a dealership to me. I have to wonder about having to do the oil pressure switch though. Does the oil light not come on just before you start the car?

Gaskets aren't very expensive though, are they?

Great. :rolleyes I know nothing about repair costs so I just threw out a number. The oil light acts normally as it should. The tech said it's got a small leak.

The oil pressure sensor on the J develops a leak too. Probably the exact same part. Cheap fix. Oil starts to force its way through the sensor.

That repair estimate seem really cheap by J30 standards as well but then again, it doesn't have the FWD issues.

Gotcha. So the sensor itself is fine, they figure they may as well replace it (cheap part) since they have to remove it to fix the leak. I figure at best, the repair costs for a G20 would be 1/2 of a Q's for similar work. What you read off would surely cost $2000 for a Q at a dealership here.

That sounds like a pricey repair bill coming, just because of the labor involved and the usually higher priced dealership parts :( If you are mechanically inclined and have a weekend to devote to the project it may be worth it to do at least some of the work yourself (motor mounts, valve cover gasket, oil pan maybe?). At least they are all non-lethal problems to the car :)

Yeah, and the service manager said no to allowing me to get the parts from somewhere else (IE Infinitipartsusa.com) and bringing them in.

If it helps, tell them my Infiniti dealer does (Major Infiniti of Kansas City, MO) :)

That might help actually. The guy's argument was that no dealer would take the parts from another dealer.

Sounds to me like you should get a second opinion. SOME dealers will stack repairs on that are not really needed. And some will nail you after they get your car in.. I recently paid 920.00 to have the timing chain tensioners replaced in my '96 Sentra. WAYYY too much! Try to get some recommendations from NICO members for a local shop that's not too greedy.

Explain to him that you're a member of NICO, an online Infiniti club with over 14K members that sees 1M hits PER DAY and that you will be reviewing his dealership's policies with us, as well as with Infiniti Corporate.

There is absolutely NO reason for them not to use Genuine Nissan parts from another dealership (other than to price-gouge). If he starts lipping off about warranty, direct him to the reverse side of the service order (there's been discussion on this before).

Actually, they should just match Joe's price if they want your business. And if they're arguing about it THAT much, you may not even want them under your hood - While you could win the argument, you could be in for a nasty surprise once they're alone with your ride (and pissed about being schooled by a customer).

Very few GOOD service managers out there - You may have found one who brought his Texaco station policy manual under his arm when he arrived for work. :rolleyes

p.s. Of the repairs you listed, I don't see any that I wouldn't trust an independent shop to do (provided they specialize in Nissans).

Check it out.

I actually was skeptical about it when they said they'd found stuff wrong with the car. The tech was very honest and upfront and took me back to the service bay to show me the damage. He pointed out everything that was messed up. The service manager basically said that they won't warranty labor if the parts don't come through their parts department. I will however get a quote from Joe and see if Norwood will match them. And I've tried local shops twice and both times they've done more harm than good.

If they give you a hard time about the warranty, it was me that had this discussion before. Basically they HAVE to honor the warranty or else they are in violation of Infiniti Corporate's policies. My number is 785-550-1351 if they have any questions. :)

Why is the price at Infinitipartsusa.com $100 less for the mounts than from Infiniti of Norwood? So far for the parts I've looked up (mounts and oil pan) I'm at $162 less than from my dealer.

Infiniti of Scottsdale, Grubbs, and Pinnacle all sell their parts around 20% off of LIST. Your dealer takes the list price and marks it up to its dealer retail. That's why we always recommend that, unless the part is relatively inexpensive to begin with, you should ALWAYS buy your parts from one of our 3 Infiniti advertisers.

My dealer at least sells parts at list price. I even said I was going to have the parts shipped directly to them from Infiniti of Scottsdale, sealed. He didn't like that idea either.

Hell I've sent Major Infiniti parts in a box that says "Infiniti of Scottsdale" right on the front. They didn't have a problem with it, or if they did, I heard nothing of it. :)
