well...i've been saving for an rb20 for a little while now and i've read up on the problem with the crank snout and the oil pump. i was wanting to know a little more about using an external oil pump and bypassing the stock unit all togather since i plan on running a front mounted oil cooler and remote oil filter anyways. also i was sort of curious if anyone makes a kit for the rb motors. i met an old hot rodder the other day with his own cnc mill and he mentioned he could make all the brackets and a filter bypass block if i needed it.

awesome thanks for the info. the next thing i'm wondering is if i have to run a dry sump with the external oil pump setup of if you could just run the pump after the remote oil filter. and does the stock pump need to be removed? i'm baisically trying to get around the whole issue with the factory setup without having to pull the crank shaft out and do the whole jun mod but if the factory pump needs to be removed and blocked off to run this i mine as well just use the sleve. and last but not least is there any point where the factory pump is rendered ineffective?

you do not have to run the dry sump. you can draw the oil from the same spot as the stock pump, but that is befor the filter not after..

yes remove the gear from the stock pump.

you do not need to remove the crank to do any of this..

the stock oil pump seems to fail around 500hp or over 7000rpms

The oil pump really fails at 500hp? Like breaks into pieces or just cant function up to the level that is needed?

What pump would you be using??I'm actually interested in this.Because I rebuilt my motor and TOTALLY forgot about the damn crank till I put the motor back in the car.The only thing that kind of makes me uneasy is what happens if the electric pump fails.I guess the same as the stock pump failing but the stock pump is always pumping as long as the motor is spinning. But I guess I just gotta watch the pressure gauge. I need to get some kinda warning buzzer/light.

Mods, can the two topics be merged?

It is not an electric pump, it is still run off of the crank like any other ancillary system. And just like your stock oil pump you would have to pay attention to pressure.

That should of been 2 sentences.I meant if the other pump failed it would be the same as the stock one failing.

and

The stock one is more reliable because it is run off the crank shaft. (thought it was electric) But also there are no belts.

I'm not planning to run Huge amounts of power or crazy RPM, so I'll probably just live with it till I paint the car. When I drop the motor, i'll pull out the crank and take it to the machine shop and collar it.
