hello all,

i was just wondering if i could get some help or some opinions on which exhaust i should get... i have done a whole lot of research but it all leads to one problem..... none of the websites i have gone to provide a sound bite for their exhausts. i want a very throaty, nice sounding exhaust and i certainly DO NOT want one of those trashcan exhausts that every ricer has (no offense). does anyone have any ideas or can help with this matter? does anyone know of any websites that i can actually get sound bites? or does anyone have an exhaust that would fit my description? PLEASE help!

btw... this exhaust is going on my '97 240 with s15 sr20det engine

thanks to all that can be of service

i've got an apex'i gt spec. its 95mm piping from the resonator back, so it flows just about as much as the duals but with a single can. the can is huge. sounds is really good... like they say, its a race-inspired exhaust (the famous apex sound). the only exhausts anyone i know will mess around with are the apex'i gt spec, tanabe super racing medallion and blitz nurspec, mainless because they all sound great and they're completely stainless steel.

my friend has a tanabe and it sounds GREAT. the only reason i didn't get it was because the apex'i flows more, but after hearing it again its a complete tossup. if you are going strictly on sound you can not go wrong with the tanabe.

we went poking around town on the hiway this last weekend when hot import nights was in town, and my friend was shooting vids from a passenger out of his car, so i'll post them up when i get them so you can hear how they sound. im emailing him right now..

I have the Nurspec on my redtop and it sounds mean. It does get loud but I love it. I had a passenger in my car the other day that remarked how loud it was while he was trying to use his cellphone when I was cruising in 5th at 3k rpms. It is loud but it sounds great.

I have the Apexi NI.

Sounds great, but its kinda loud. After beeing in the car with a friend who has a 1jz and a full greddy, Im thinking of switching. I will probrably lose some power, but the car wont be so loud.

You can't go wrong with Apexi. The GT spec is the best IMHO after having owned a few N-1's before it. Plus it has a pipe diameter big enough that you can fist it! it's nuts. Comes highly recomended, and it sounds and looks pretty good.

gt spec is all one piece also, and it's pretty tucked... even lowering the car 2", the exhaust should have more clearance than the tanabe. the tanabe sits LOW. i think the gt spec is the best all around, but i still think on sound it's beat by the tanabe. i heard the nurspec is the loudest of all of them.

you really have to listen to both though before making a decision, because everyone's preferences are different.

Hey you have to admit, fisting your exhaust all the way up to your elbow is a big selling point heheh.

HKS gives some sound bites. I have a ca18det, but I think we both want the same thing. I have a BRM (AZhitman's company) catback with a 22" resonator. I have a resonated 3" test pipe, 3" o2 pipe, and 3" downpipe. I thought the resonators would help deaden the sound, but it really drones. It is really throaty, but it's ridiculously loud. Not as loud as an SR w/ 3" and no resonators (I drove one of those), but still really loud. But it's really quiet at idle. I drove an SR w/ 3" all the way to a HKS Hiper (supposed to be really loud) but it had a gutted cat. and it was very nice. It didn't drone at all but it did sound nice, so I'll be doing the same w/ my car. I don't even car if I drop some power, it'll be minimal and I just don't care if I can have a car that doesn't set off factory car alarms. I recommend this setup on your car, and I also recommend the RS*R Exmag, which sounds and looks really nice while still performing like the drone exhausts.

hey mynismo,

with the diameter of the piping being 95mm (or 3.74in. for those of you who don't know) wouldn't you have to worry about back flow? or even the piping being so big that the exhaust gases cannot be pushed out? i've always been told to never go above 3"...is that wrong or incorrect? please shed some light...b/c after listening to the vid. i am interested, just not sure if i should go that big. i don't want eng. probs.

thank you

p.s. and do you know where i can get that exhaust? websites, etc.?

just to add, i also want an exhaust that is not too loud. i would like to be able to have a conversation with someone if they were in the car or be able to use my cellphone while driving. when i get an exhaust, should i use the silencer? how much quieter does it REALLY get? i think i am gonna go with the gt spec, but i really want to hear the tanabe super medalion racing exhaust before i make a final decision...

thanks mynismo for vid.... i want more!

I will try to get a soundbyte of the Nurspec for you. I don't have a video camera so I will have to figure out another way.

Did you see my post above? Use a gutted cat w/ a loud exhaust like an N1, Nurspec, Hyper/Hi Power, etc. or get the RS*R Exmag. That's how to get an exhaust with a reasonable sound level. By the way the Exmag is a very nice exhaust. It has a nice tone.

yea it was tough to hold a cam and shift at the same time... thats why i didn't break my tires really loose in 2nd like i normally do

its 95mm from the resonator back. so big that the exhaust gases cannot be pushed out? huh? that doesn't make sense.

i've got a turbo, and test pipe on thats why its probably not too loud. on a n/a car it would be REALLY loud because its huge piping. you probably dont want that too big of a piping on an n/a as well because it decreases a lot of the backpressure which is good for an n/a. with a turbo, the bigger the exhaust (and turbo outlet & downpipe as well), the better. you want absolutely no backpressure on a turbo, little resistence and as big as you can get.

if you want it just type it in google and you'll find tons of spots to buy it from. a lot of places don't have it in stock and have to order it from japan, so ask some places if they have it in stock before giving them your credit card number.

Who cares how it sounds, be hardcore and get the GT spec since it's the biggest. It also sounds a lot better than the Greddy, Tanabe, or HKS ones I've heard.

i guess that the information that i have always been told by all my car buddies is wrong, if what you are saying is true. if it is, i can't wait to go to them and show them up. thanks for the info mynismo...

The HKS Race Spec is the largest exhaust out there. It uses 102mm (4.01 inch) stainless steel piping and a 115mm titanium muffler. Its big, its light, it has suprisingly good ground clearance, and its loud.

But on the downside its very expensive. You can get it from Japan for about $1300+ or in the US for more from HKS. Also it was only made for the S13 not the S14 or S15 (in the Silvia series).

They are pretty rare my buddy had one before he sold his S13.

As for back pressure, thats something that people without turbochargers need to take into consideration. Generally with turbos, bigger is better.

Hi all i hve 91 s13 and im confused which exhaust to choose. Isst true that N1 with complete catback has the straightest piping?

A'PEXi N1 CAT. BACK EXHAUST for 89-94 NISSAN 240SX ALL (115mm Tip/75-85mm Piping) $370

BLITZ NUR SPEC RACING CAT. BACK EXHAUST for 91-94 NISSAN 240SX (114.3mm Tip/80mm Piping) $525

HKS HI-POWER CAT. BACK EXHAUST for 89-94 NISSAN 240SX (115mm Tip/65mm Piping) $452

i know the N1 single has the best price and i was about to buy it till i read this forum. and im alittle confused. My friend had a N1 DUAL and he said its not as loud as the blitz one, so he cut the head off and bought a blitz head and he says now this is loud with the straightest piping for a 240.

so issit true apexi has the straightest piping? thanks

your leaving out one thing... there's a reason why the n1 is the cheapest. its not stainless steel.

the gt spec is the best bang for buck.. one piece, slanted, good tone, huge piping and stainless steel. 500+shipping.

it will eventually rust. mine old one started to rust after about 4 months. and wait until it snows... heh. your other questions, yes and yes. the gt spec is the biggest, and all the apex'i's are pretty straight.

don't know where they have them in stock. my shop ordered me one from one of his sources. you might want to try http://www.projectnissan.com

yes you need a flange for the bov. enjukuracing sells the hotpipes with the flanges already welded on.
