EX35 RWD High Pitch Humming Noise?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi everyone - I just purchased my new 2011 EX35 RWD last week, and when I started taking it on the freeways, I noticed a high pitched humming/ringing noise. It's different than the one described in the other threads here where it's more of a high pitch electrical sound - mine is more of a high pitch vibration sound whenever I accelerate.

I took the car to the dealer yesterday and went on the freeway with the technician who also heard the same noise whenever I accelerated, mainly over 50mph. The technician believed the sound was coming from the rear.

After 24 hours of investigations, the dealer called me to let me know that basically nothing is wrong with the car. They tested an AWD which had no sounds whatsoever, but when they tested another RWD found the same noise to be there. Honestly, it sounds like you're driving a Ford or Buick or something ...it's that loud and annoying...I can't imagine that this really is a standard 'feature' for the RWDs.

Does anybody have any advice? The service records are documented in good details, with what I summarized above and equating the issue to the exhaust frame for RWD and that it is 'normal'...

First of all thank you very much for the links! I don't think it's a fuel pump issue since I don't hear any odd noise at start up and I assume the dealer would have checked that out. However the threads about the ECM seem to be similar to my circumstance. But with a new 2011 wouldn't I have the latest ECM pre-installed? Or is that assumption way off...?

Yeah I would assume most of the known issues should have been corrected in the 2011 model. Maybe one of our knowledgeable moderators will chime in and see if they have any input, would probably have much better suggestions and experience. Thought I'd take a pick at it in the meantime lol.

Any of the mechanics here have an idea?

If you really get nowhere with the dealer you could try putting the car on a chassis dyno and see if you can reproduce the sound in a controlled environment. My 08 2wd doesn't make noises like that when on the gas above 50MPH.

Thanks for the suggestion. Good to know this isn't a standard "feature" of the rwd. Now I really do feel like the dealership really didn't try to fix it and instead just dismissed it.

I called Infiniti consumer affairs today who opened my case and told me I should hear from a regional specialist by tomorrow.

An update:

I escalated to Infiniti Consumer Affairs and got assigned a regional specialist who really has been no help at all.

I've been unsatisfied so far so I took the car to another dealer. The mechanic also heard the noise and didn't think it was normal. Today I am told by the service consultant at the dealer that the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with it and also took another RWD EX35 and heard the noise.

Bottom line is everyone agrees it's not a normal sounding noise but it's not getting fixed. What should I do? Would this qualify under lemon law (I'm in CA)? Do I escalate it to Consumer Affairs?

Are there any other 2011 EX35 RWD owners here??
