Synthetic IS thinner! Notably when it is at higher temperatures....
Quote »DISADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC OIL Cost is one big disadvantage. Also, can't really be used in an older engine due to the nature of synthetics, it tends to be a bit thinner at high temperature. This can exacerbate oil leaks and oil burning. Since the oil is more expensive, it makes the leaks/burning more expensive Another disadvantage is that synthetic oil usually is lower in viscosity at low temperatures. It will have a tendency to drain down faster. You may hear your engine more on cold startup. [/quote]READ:

You can't examine this like you could spooge by putting some between your index finger/thumb and playing taffy with it. It goes slightly deeper than that.
Synthetic oil is "addictive"...esp after you see an engine that was run on it as opposed to engines that weren't. But what I think you meant was "additives," which if that is your worry, then stay away from oils containing high amounts of polymers I.E. 5w-30 and 10w-40. They tend to shear/burn at high temperatures leaving deposits that can cause several different problems. That is why I run 10w-30. Its just fine for pretty much anywhere that temps do not get below 0*F.
