hey, Ive been doing some reading on engine swaps lately. The only thing i have forgotten to think about is legality. I live in PA and from what ive read, a lot of the swaps will make the car only legal for off road use. What do you guys know about this? What engines would remain legal. My main engine thoughts are rb25, 26 and 2jz. Sr20 are also on my thought train...but not as high as the famous skyline engines.

Try running a search on "legal engine" or similar.. I got 141 topics, 10pages worth of threads and discussions from "legal engine"

This very topic has been beaten and discussed and searched many times.

Search is up in the right hand corner.:)

i'm confused...are you trying to say that the rb25 and rb26 are not skyline motors?

im not saying that there not skyline motors...im saying that its illegal to have one in a 240 ... which just sucks so bad. the way it seems from what ive just been looking online about is that anything that changes the car from stock is illegal. i hate that

NOOOO!!! i cant accept it. I wont a kick a*# car with a rb25 that i can drive everyday and not have to deal with cops. also theres the little problem here in pa with the emission and other stuff. so what...just give up on the whole modding thing. what? i hate PA. whats there to do then...people mod there cars for shows and all that and they get my tests. do i just go for it and hope theyre nice enough for me to pass. i mean whats everyone do. i cant accept it...i wont...i need a hug :(

There are thousands upon thousands of people with illegal rides out there. If they can do it, there's quite obviously a way to. Don't give up, just think and have money. :)

unless you harass the officers when they pull you over, you shouldn't get flack from them. officers aren't trained to recognize imported engines and such. it doesn't matter what state you live in, the J-spec SR20 and the RB series engines are illegal. Plain and simple. What matters is how you can get away with it.

you could run lp gas or methanol, it's done very often, and I'm sure that even w/o cats you'll pass with flying colors...

Oh and you can register it under alternate fueled power car...

most likely youd have to insure the car and the motor if you want insurance to pay for another rb25

I've seen this happen to a couple of members at the rx7 sites, and I think you just have to clear that you have modifications done to your car in the insurance form...

If you crash, gather your reciepts, and I think that's that, then buy the car from the insurance company for < than 500$ and part it out....:D

PA absolutely does have an emissions test, it's just not done in every county..yet. Bucks County has it and it's pretty strict. The rest of the state will soon have it. If you do the swap, I think you'll eventually need to find an authorized inspection mechanic who is willing to risk the penalties for getting caught handing out emissions stickers without inspection, which are far more severe than what you would get for getting caught driving a car running a non-u.s.spec motor. I'm sure there are less than honest PA mechanics out there that would do it for you for a price. I personally wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't ask my mechanic to risk his inspection license to do it either. but that's just me.Good luck

yes i was mistaken, about 45-55% of PA counties are now getting Emissions, but down here in York County, Lancaster County, and the other surrounding as far as i know there are none, and i forget where but somewhere i believe in harrisburg theres a garage that has done a lot of "false" tests and passed peopel with SR's

He meant does he need to bribe the mechanic or befriend him. The answer is you won't know until you meet one. I imagine there are a few willing to do it, but I'm not sure they'd want their names broadcast all over the internet . Remember what they are doing is illegal in PA. If there are any PA SR owners that know of mechanic willing to do it, y'all might want to take that discussion private.

you still cant use a udm motor unless its from the same car. i have info on a 2jz swap, but it still wouldnt be legal in the 240...even if the supra was born and bred in the us...in other words not imported from japan

here, let me clear this up for you.

#1 - search. your obviously just being lazy.

#2 - no JDM engines, engines your car didnt come with, or engines never sold in america are legal for use on public highways. you want a motor swap? do it. will it be legal?-no.

stop complaining about the legal aspect of it, because its not legal.

OK?
