Hey what's up everyone! After a long slow process I finally got my engine out. Bought the Z for 1k with a blown motor and I am going to get this one rebuilt. Here is the thread with pictures for people who haven't seen my Z yet: bought-my-first-z-t542788.html

My plan was to rebuild it myself but with working 6 days a week and going to school its kinda hard to find the time. So I am going to take it to a shop to get all the internal work done and me and my dad will put the rest back together. All I wanna do is get her running as soon as possible lol. I have 2 machine shops that I am talking to about doing the work, both have rebuilt this motor before. I was just wondering what is the average price of a rebuild if I am just looking to get a nice running TT nothing to crazy? The first shop I talked to gave me a price of 4K to 4.5K and said I could bring the motor down asap, does that sound about right for a full rebuild? There's another Z in my town and this is the shop he told me he took his Z to get rebuilt at.

The second shop is always very busy and can't take my whole motor right away to start. He told me to bring my heads down first to get done, then the block. This shop said I would save money doing it this way but hasn't given me a set price yet. So I just wanted to post this and get some good feedback before I make my decision on a shop and to get an idea of pricing from you guys. I plan on going to talk to each of the guys on Tuesday in person.

Thanks Pete

it depend on what is damaged inside the engine, but $4500 seems high, I think I remember paying $2250 for a complete long block rebuild a few years ago.

i'm so jelly! everyone pulling engines these days

$4500 might be about right, depends what their definition of a complete rebuild is.. i'm guessing they'll pay about $2000 for internals and parts + labour

$4500 for a stock rebuild is way too high. You can get an IPP built stg 1 long block for $3350 IIRC fully assembled.

I love seeing these motor pull threads..good motivation. Just got mine on the engine stand last night.

4,500 isn't high at all, you get some wiseco pistons and eagle rods in there, if you want cams or valves 1mm+, and it adds up fast.
i guess it all depends on what you're getting.

Thanks everyone, glad to have finally pull my first VG!! I've been very busy working on the engine the past few weeks. Went to harbor freight and bought an engine stand and have been wrenching on it ever since I got it out. This past Monday I finally got everything off besides the pistons and crankshaft and on Tuesday I took my block down to the second shop I was talking about! Thanks for all the feedback on the 4500 price that seemed a little high to me too so I went with the second shop. My 1 piston was burned up pretty good, however the wall looked in good shape, no cracks or anything. I only found 1 very small piece of metal in my oil pan, so I guess that's better then tons in there lol. My turbos have hardly any shaft play and there was normal looking oil sitting in them when I took them off. I would be in trouble if the oil was milky looking correct? I'm still gonna get the turbos checked out but they looked pretty good to me. I have to run to work now though, just wanted to update you guys a little. I have a lot of pictures coming too. Thanks again everyone!

Congrats man! Nice work

4500 for a rebuild with forged pistons and headwork etc isn't high. For stock pistons and rods and the like, yeah, it's high.
