Engine Choices

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

Obviously we're all reading this because we're either tired of the current motor, want to swap in somthing original or simply want as much power as possible and the motor you have isn't doing a good enough job.

Honestly, I'd like to start this thread and discuss all of our options and related reasons to why.

I like 2 particular motors, the LS1, obviously because of its huge power output capabilities on stock internals and the fact that it's actually lighter then the KA currently residing in my S14.

But I also love the VH45 out of the Infiniti Q45. Since I can purchase an entire car for the price of the LS1 motor/tranny set. It's very light, has DOHC's and can be revved to 7800 easy with a simple valve spring swap.

Other then those two motors, what is everyone looking at? Are there any light weight inline 6 motors? What about the aluminum 4.5 liter 5 cylinder GM unit. I know it comes in the Colorado and the Trailblazer. Its a huge inline motor and is still lighter then the KA with torque for days. I think it may even have direct injection...which is awsome.

So, what are everyones opinions?

The Ls1 is a good choice. But here are the engines I was looking at before I decided on the one Im using.

of course the rb26, 2jz, 20b, 4g63, vq35, any of those motors will work and all have really backing to make horsepower. Now as far as weight I dunno.

I know with the swap kit im using the 2jz sits as far back and very low as poosible to keep everything pretty well bablanced out.

Id like to see more people chime in and see their thoughts.

Well, I'm not going to swap in a motor that is a heavy anchor unless its a blown big cube motor...simply because I can buld a small block for 1000WHP for the pirce of 2JZ Rods...lol.

Thats why I'm looking for light weight options. I just wonder what all of the options are. For the record, if I stick a Nissan/Infiniti motor in, it'll be a VH or the Titan 5.6...which is still $1000000 lol.

2JZ FTW. Simple as that. When you start thinking of Motors that can produce 800WHP On STOCK MOTOR that is telling you something! i've seen STOCK TURBO'D Supras go into the 10's as well as STOCK MOTOR SINGLE TURBO SUPRAS in the 9's And 10's.To me weight isn't a big deal cause once you get above 500WHP Weight isn't gonna be a big deal. You don't see many 500+ WHP Nissans so the extra few hundred pounds you put into the car won't matter for the extra 300ish HP you can make on a Stock motor, with built motor your HP is into the nutty region thats why i am currenty saving to do the swap. But then again i'm a Supra/2J fan boy. 1 Ride in a Single turbo supra you will want one!

Oh I almost bought a MKIV...there's no doubt it owns the Import drag racing world. To argue would be stupid. What are the 2JZ clips going for? Post up some links...

A few other motors i was thinking about was

-3.8L Turbo V6 engine out of the Buick GN and Regal T Type

-Try and rig a 4G63 onto a Might max? Truck trans.

-13B Rotory

-That or Call me what you will but i was thinking a 2.4L SRT-4 Motor would be pretty sick lol i have not the slightest clue if you could find a trans to convert to rwd.

Well to get a USDM 2J motor you should find someone who needs your organs lol

I've seen the USDM ones go for about $3800 - $7000 or so.

AS far as as the JDM ones i've seen a motor, trans, harness, ecu, everything for between $2600 up through $3800 depending on what trans you want 6 speed get ready to PAY ALOT MORE! thats why i plan on going auto or the 5spd swap....unsure yet

BUT! When goin with the JDM 2J you get smaller injectors and smaller turbos. in addition, the turbos are made of ceramic as oppose to the usdm's steal

But the price differance between the 2 i can get upgraded injectors and maybe a new turbo kit

It also helps that i have 2 friends with HIGHLY MODDED supra's and they both have alot of stock parts and alot of hook-ups in the Import communitiy. And they both own there own online performance parts compnany so i can get the things i neeed cheaper

i will get some links up shortly

I did some more thinking on the 2JZ...Its nice but to get one to even close to 800 you're talking big money. I don't even care if you're not swapping rods and pistons. The turbo and engine managment alone is VERY expensive. Plus, you're looking more at 650 for a realistic stock internal motor. Not to mention you're only building a LAG machine...I've driven big single cars on lots of occasions, I'm no spring chicken. Thats why I'd lean towards a V8 swap. Right now torque is simply to fun to ignore. Toss a big single on it and well...you've got a winner in my book.

True i give you that, but i've never been a big V8 powered guy, i'd rather spend more money and build a 2J/RB/SR/KA/4G63 etc.... then do a LS1 or LT1 or what not. but thats JUST ME

I like the idea of a regal GNX motor swap. But short of that a VQ would be cool. I wanna do a KA-T or something crazy next. The SR swap was too easy. I need a challenge.

Edit: Forgot the 13B!!!!!!!! Rotaries own!

PP 20B or 13B with a MASSIVE TURBO spinning to like 15k rpms. That'd be hot...plus you'd shoot HUGE flames.

L28ET, not light but it's the cheapest way I know to get nbig power form an inline 6

I've seen complete VQ35's with trans going for as cheap as $1500, and I havn't seen one in a 240SX yet which if more than I can say for most of the options

The idea in this forum is to use any motor that isn't Datson/Nissan/Infiniti...Rotaries suck ***...thats why there are so many in the junkyard.

My friend drives a 3rd gen camaro and he used to refer to people who owned rx7's as rotards....lets just say a mildly built 13B in a gutted FC pushing 15psi (spiking to 20psi) changed his mind lol

Ok, everyone has their own opinions. Rotaries are prone to cracking Apex seals like I piss after a 12pack of Corona. Reliability goes out the window as soon as you add any decent amount of boost and you'd better have a top notch cooling system.

The only rotary remotely close to competing with the turbo 8 is the 3 rotor. Which is even expensive in Japan.

I'm definitly a torque guy myself...so that makes the wankle and non player in my mind.

My friend over on Oki was putting down somthing in the 700's with the SDS ECU and a great hand port, 20B though.

FYI the srt-4 motor will bolt up to a certain Jeep tranny. But I wouldn't do this because I think the sr20 is superior imo.

Personally I'm going to do a vh45 in my 240z, because its reletively cheap to buy and has huge potential. Also it doesn't weight too much and offers better weight distribution than an I6.

The 2JZ is a beast but its expensive and changes weight distribution.

Rotories will run forever, so long as there isn't a turbo on them. When boosted, keep it properly maintained with good cooling and it will be good for 90k miles, unless you get boost happy. I personally prefer a motor with more torque but the rpm range is incredible.

I currently have a L28et in my S30 and its a great motor, but I want something with more potential, as 400hp would be about all I could get out of it with what I would be willing to do to it.

400 whp (so more like 500 crank) is the limit on the L6 with the stock cast pistons, put some custom forged pistons with an overbore and the LD crank and a few have exceeded 500 whp, quite a few in the 425-450 whp range, enough for a high 10 second pass in a lightweight car

I like the VH45 but run out of Ideas when it comes to a transmission. I know WD likes the Autos for Drag racing and If I planned on Drag racing I would also.

I plan on Autocrossing my car and want a Manual trans. Seems like it would be a pain to find a 5 speed that would fit behind that motor. Maybe the Z32 unit. I read somewhere that it has been done but that type of fabrication is out of my league.

What about a VK45? It's a big engine but it makes pretty good power (more than a ford 32v and I think pretty close to an LS1).

Most of us using the Z32 5-speed bought an adapter plate which allows the tranny to bolt right up to the VH. There's actually a guy selling his as he dumped his project. Take a look at the VH forum, I believe his usename is pmpmstrb. Here we go: zerothread/204142

Ya, I'm too greedy and want more than that, but am unwilling to put that much effort into my 23 year old motor when I could buy a newer more advanced motor with a lot better potential, especially a motor as torquey as the vh.

i dounno about that one, personally i really like the SRT-4 motor setup. lots of tourqe lots of HP and easy to make 450HP on stock internals. I've seen 3 or 4 SRT-4's upwards of 600WHP which is pretty cool. If i had alot of money i might do it to a S30 after i have a 2J'd and a Ls7 powered S30 just to say i have a Neon on motor

The 2jz swap would cost just a much as getting an sr20 front clip and you trying to make 400whp with it. I mean mine will be in stock form fo a bit and it will run around 8k shop qoute me doing it 6500. ill be making around 400 with just that now add injectors, fp, single and ems and your talkn 600+hp.

God, I could only imagine how beastly of a vh45 I could build if I had that much money to through at it.

Don't leave out the 2JZ-GE motor and throwing a turbo on that. They can make insain HP and are a bit cheaper then the turbo brothers. And I would never do a 2jz swap without going with a full standalone (Tech II, SDS, Haltech, megasquirt ect..) Wiring them is soo much easier then trying to wire up the stock ecu and you can get the motor even cheaper with a cut harness/no ecu.
