I've looked all thru my mini FSM and I can't seem to find how remove the shift knob.......do you have any other info?

I need to get into the shifter "box" under there to check and test the "1 position switch".

Thanks,-Andy

Never mind.....I figured it out.

1.) CAREFULY pry off button with flat bladed screwdriver. (from right hand side)

2.) Using a 12mm or 1/2" deep socket, remove the nut inside the shift knob.

3.) Remove knob.

Please please please someone provide some input on this. I really would like to change shift knobs.

I would love to try a m45/q45 shift knob..

Our shift knobs have a button to disengage the lock, which these other shifts don't..

Is a swap possible.. I may just get one and try it, but I'd really like to have some knowledageble input..

the new m45/q45 shift knobs are sexy

Well when you remove the knob all you have left is the outer shift "stick" with an inner rod that the button on the knob pushes down to allow the shifter to move out of P and past R. The "shift lock" is a seperate button and mechanism attached to the side of the main shift "stick".

I really do not see why any aftermarket AUTOMATIC knob would not work. All that the new knob needs is a button on the top that will push down to engage the "lock".

BTW, MOMO has a VERY nice NEW auto knob for around $100 USD. I have seen it on Ebay for $80 or so. It looks as if it would work fine.-Andy

None of these aftermarket knobs have a push button lever though...

That is the problem..

What would be cool is something that just sat on there (firmly) and youd push down on the entire thing.. Sleek!

Do a search of Ebay for "Shift Nob" or "Shift Knob".....there are several designs on there that are EXACTLY what you are describing Wes.

Hmm so you have to get one with the button.. that really limits choices... Do they have any with buttons that are styled something like this..

After having the shift knob apart today, I'd have to say that I could probably make one out of wood fairly easily...in fact I KNOW I could.

Ok, I need some clairifcation..

Those you just linked, don't have a button

Do you HAVE to have a button on the shift knob, in order for it to downshift?

The knobs in those ebay links push down.....the WHOLE knob pushes down to engage the "lockout". Scroll down the page and study their little diagram closely.

Is there anyway to use a normal shift knob, that doesn't have a push down button?

None that I can see.....something has to "push" down that internal rod in order for the shifter to be allowed to move out of Park and past Reverse.

I'd pay the $100, over getting one of those tacky looking ebay ones..

My god those are fugly.. I'm not driving a civic here.. Give me the nice italian leather with the momo label..

Still looks somewhat too flashy..

I would love something like this.. Nothing but nice stiched leather, in a conservative design.. Costs half as much as well.. No button though..

Damn the button..
