As long as it has a button, I suppose it would work..

Maybe we can find an OEM one from a different manufacturor that would work as well, and look somewhat OEM still..

Anyone know of any cars they can think of that had really nice shift knobs, with button locks?

The Q's interior is ultra-slick, super high class, and doesnt get in your way. But the only brightness inside is the gold clock.

What I'd love to have are silver or gold rings around the gauges, the most dull and lifeless part of the interior.

I wonder if I could bend some metal and make my own? Any crafty types have feedback on this?

Perhaps a strip of gold or silver between where the top and bottom dash meet would be a nice touch too, and I'd imagine easy to install.

The guages are beautiful at night, some of the best of any cars.. During the day they are boring looking..

The cars interior really shines at night, but is somewhat dull during the day..

Chrome rings around the guages would look really nice.. I've seen those chrome gauge bezels, but those cover the entire gauge area, and I think defeat the glowing effect, when the lights are on. I would like chrome rings around the guages themselves..

I was looking at my friends XJR, and I think some of it's interior niches would look ince one the Q.. Such as the speaker grills are black with silver.. Chrome around the outside of the grills as well. Very classy looking. The Q would like nice with more prominent speaker grilling and a chrome ring around the grills..

Gold clock? I thought you had a first gen.. Did you swap out the clock or something.. I thought they didn't implement the gold clock until 94+

Hmm.. these look like normal knobs, but apparently have a button on top of them

http://www.exoticwooddash.com/shifters.htm

Not sure if that applies to all the auto ones, but it appears to..

Damn this button. CURSE THE BUTTON.. I know I've said, but the more shift knobs I see, the more I hate it!!

I think the momo is the classiest looking unit I've found, with the button.. I think it would look super nice with the leather aluminum combo, espically on black interior..

I'm going to scour around some more.. If anyone can think of any nice OEM units out of any other vehicle makes they've seen (that use buttons) let me know..

If I can't find anything, I'm going to take the plunge and order this one..

Andy,

Those do look nice, but the site is a little ambiguous as to which ones have that button..

I can't tell from the site if it's only the two in the same where as the top button is pictured, or it applies to every automatic shift knob they have featured.

My guess is that ALL of the auto ones have to have a button...in fact I don't "think" you could hve an automatic transmission that did not have some kind of "lock-out" for Park and Reverse... I could be wrong , but I doubt it. :D

I bought my gold clock from a guy on the forum who wrecked his 94. I bought his entire upper and lower black dash too, to rid myself of the god-awful orange bling-wood that came with my car.

I also agree with your sentiments about the shifter button. Its just a annoyance... my Benz didnt have one, and I thought it looked and operated better.

It would be fairly easy to disable the "lock-out"....essentially make it so the "button" was pushed in all of the time. Then you could use a regular manual knob.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure that would be a "wise" idea......I just have horrid visions of bumping it into Reverse while cusin' along at 70......Not a good thing!

This might also cause problems with the "Shift lock" function that seems to be relatively important to ignition and AT function....

I agree jesda.. The new Infinitis don't use it.. at least the Q/M don't..

It trully limits our selection of custom shift knobs..

I'm going down the same road you are, regarding getting rid of the wood. I was thinking about replacing it with carbon fibre..

How much are the new dash pieces.. maybe that is the best option..

I just put a HUGE CF (real) dash kit in NICOmom's Pathfinder.

I'm considering ripping the wood out of my Q and replacing it with the birds-eye maple that's an (expensive) option available on the new M45. Now to find someone who sells it... Where's JasonB when I need him?

I'm just not sure on wood...

If it's real wood, and designed for the interior like the new m45/q45 that's one thing..

Something about wood you "paste" on to surfaces just seems fake.. I know it can be real, but how great can it be... Real wood is designed into the interior, and seems thicker.. This aftermarket wood seems to thin to be nice..

Maybe its just me

I dig the birds eye maple in the new Q, as well as the wood applied to the Caddy XLR (go sit in one, theyre gorgeous).

But mine was this odd shade of orange and brown that felt unnatural, even though it was real wood. And the pattern was weird too.

I totally agree.

I just don't think you can get a "kit" that looks as good as the oem designs.. maybe it's just me.. I've never seen a wood kit for the G50 that looks anything as nice or OEM as a new Qs... I don't know if it's the quality/the design or what.. I think it's the fact it's a stick on thin flimsy piece of wood.. even if it is real, it just doesn't look oem.

Hey did you guys figure anything out for the shift knob?

Ryan-- the company whose site you found (http://www.exoticwooddash.com/shifters.htm)is 2 miles from my office. Maybe I'll go see what they have in stock if you haven't come up with a better idea since your post.

I'd like to see their kits for the Q, just for the heck of it.

The site doesn't show ANY shift knobs and the dash kits are all for newer cars... no 1st gen stuff listed. It may be that the site doesn't show everything he has and you have to fill out his CGI form for more info...?
