Im looking to gain a little more room in the engine bay as well as maybe free up a pony or to. My car has a phenominal electrical system and Id like to change my 01 Infiniti Qx4 over to electric fans.
Am I silly to think its as simple as pulling off the oem shroud, unbolting the fan just before the pulley it runs off of. Installing some electric fans and voila!! bobs your uncle??

Or do you have to actually eliminate that pulley??

Heres a pic of my bay

Shroud is like 4.5""!!!!

Sorry if this is a noob question, but Id like to do this mod.

thanks for any help :mike

You'll need to keep that pulley, it runs your waterpump, very important!
If you're going to install an electrical fan, make sure it has a shroud as well.

I'd keep the stock fan though, it's very efficient and the power loss is minimal.

I believe that there were a few threads regarding this in the Pathy/QX4 section. I'm almost positive Pwnin did this to his Pathy. Give him a shout.

Ya i was looking through old posts but cant seem to find anything on anyone doing it.

So that pulley doesnt needed to be removed in order to "gain hp"

Its just the fan that it has to rotate that was costing power??

Trying to rotate everything costs power.
But removing that pulley won't do you any good, without it the water pump won't turn and you'll overheat in a jiffy.

Eh, who needs that silly waterpump, with electric fans it would just be air cooled!

You're not going to gain any HP by removing that stock fan. You're just going to lose an teeny-tiny little bit of drag on acceleration when the car is hot and clear up some room in front of the engine.

Hell, I think the latter reason is a more respectable one for doing said mod to the fan system! It will make it easier to change belts and other stuff...

Ok but aparently the fan has fluid in it, if I take off the shroud, then those 4 bolts that you can see in my pic for the fan, would fluid come out?? or is that sealed??

im thinking 4 of these would pull a premium before race wars

http://cgi.ebay.ca/10-inch-10-ELECTRIC- ... 4aa445acb9

There local to me and I can get them fairly cheaper

Anyone have any info on ho to wire them so they turn on only when the car warms up though??

You'll want a fan controller, Hayden makes good fans and temp sensitive relays.
You put a thermometer on the radiator and set a temp and it turns on at the specified temperature.

Well I dont get the fan controllers. Im currently adding a autometer water temp gauge so Im going to make an adapter in my lower rad hose with a fitting place for its own temperature sensor. I could add another sensor bung hole but I dont know what exactly to buy, for the cheapest price while still having good reliability

Id like to have this turn on and off on its own when the temperature is right, but I def dont want to spend more on the controller and crazy wiring schematic then I do on the fans.

Thanks

You're going to need a fan controller.

Also, companies make adapters for sensors.
I don't know if they'll work on your coolant hoses, since the size of hoses vary from car to car.

Ya Ill just make my own adapter, I can make it much more compact with whatever size bungs I need.

I dont see any nice fan controllers, I can get 4 10" fans for $170. Or a should I just get a 16" would that not be as powerful as stock??

What is it with QX4 owners? Stop thinking this way, this is a main part of your engine coolant system!
You go for reliability first, cost should be the last thing on your mind for this type of stuff. Otherwise, enjoy your 4 hours on the side of the road with a blown motor from detonation waiting for AAA.

And you need a fan controller, because you WILL turn the fans on one day and forget when you park it, and come back to a dead battery. Or if you hook it up to the ignition and run them all the time when the car is on, your car will not heat up to operation temp properly on colder days and you will complain about mileage and other things...

I'd go for two large electric fans with a shroud.

I had one large electric fan with no shroud and it wasn't that great I overheated one one summer day and went back to stock.

well im just not looking to spend $100 on a controller that simply acts as a switch to give or take away power from the fans

Any my battery definetely wont die if I left them running, I have dual alternators and 4 batteries in this car and can leave the stereo running for a LONG time with the car off without it dying

Enough about that, I will be adding a aftermarket temp gauge, so Im going to have a good readout of the temp. I was just looking for some help if there was a very simple fan controller that would simply turn them on or off at whatever temp

Summit does not ship to Canada where I am.

There was a $25 version on the link you posted above, it uses what looks to be a temp probe that is placed between the rad fin to measure temp, is that accurate enough??

If that kit will work fine I will try and find it here in canada

It should be pretty accurate.
You warm up your car to the temp you want the fans to turn on at, then you turn the adjustment knob until it turns on, now it'll always turn on at that temp.

Would wiring be fairly complicated

I understand the feeling, I absolutely hate wiring things together and it wasn't too bad, haha.
Just took some time to sit in the garage and stare at the schematic and made some sense of it.

I just hate adding aftermarket wiring to my car really, when you have to run single wires to different places its hard to make it look pretty

Thanks guys, I guess my water temp adapter only needs to have one fitting on it.

Would I want my water tmperaute gauge sensor probe to be on the upper or lower rad hose?? Only one of them has constant fluid when the thermostat is shut right???

I wish my rad had a few bungs already welded on it!!!

Put the probes at the top, it'll get the reading of the coolant as it exits the engine, which I think is better.

Run the wires along with the stock harnesses, I have a lot of extra wiring in my car and you can't really tell.

You're forgetting a very important component.

The fan is also tripped by the air conditioning.

That's just the a/c fan.
What he could do is wire one of his e-fans to activate via the temp controller, then wire the other to replace the a/c fan so it turns on when the a/c turns on.

That's what some 240sx people do, since putting e-fans on the radiator requires removing the stock a/c fan as well.
