The rubber strip simply pulls off. You can cut the strip with aluminum cutters since there is an aluminum strip inside the rubber. Then simply re-install. BTW, I used a 2-1/4" hole saw.

I used a hole saw just as you suggested and I had no problems installing my new fan. Everything seems to be in great working order. Thanks for all your help!
