I'm debating putting one on the Miata once the turbo job is done (pre-cat). Does anyone have one? How do you like it?

Some of these things are pretty expensive. Is it worth it?

They all leak, eventually.

Slightly cheaper would be a mechanical one rigged to open with boost level.

Thats stupid. You'd be better off with a $25 one from ebay. My buddy had one on his SRT4 and it was badass'er with the flip of a switch, tho I dont know who made it. They all will leak slightly at the butterfly. Just use a good gasket and an e-cuttout that is thick with good fitment (ie namebrand). I'd get one if I was turbo'd :squint:

How about just installing an exhaust system that flows well all the time?

I have one that hasn't been installed in my Trans Am for a while. Totally worth the purchase price, especially because you have a welder at home.

I love it, makes you sound like a race car! :chuckle:

Emissions are one reason I could see. Also there are times when I know I would much rather have a quiet exhaust. My s13 has a headerback on it and it is way too loud for my personal tastes on a daily. I could see the benefit of having super quiet exhaust with a cutout for race applications. :gotme

My friend had a Turbo integra that was like 336 to 450+hp depending on boost that had one.

He HAD a 3" thermal dynamics exhaust, after 2-3 exhaust violations it had to go.

We decided a QTEC and a stock exhaust would be a fun combo. Stock exhaust from the bottom of the line integra is like 1 1/4" at the back. So cops left him alone even though his car was just as loud as before.

We started out driving around not in boost and leaving it closed. then when we got on the highway or something we'd open it. After like a month it got gunked up and stopped opening and closing. so we just left it partially open and it worked okay. just watch out on inspections that its not leaking.

I'd say mechanical would work better than the electric cutout.

Well the reason I want it to begin with is so that I won't be obnoxious all the time. Plus with the top down, it would be even louder, which I'm guessing would get old pretty quick. My 240 already has pretty much the free-est flowing exhaust you can have.

I wouldn't mind having a mechanical one if I could set it to open at like, 6psi or something.

Yeah, I definately haven't seen one that works based on boost but that sounds like a good Idea.

Right, because a cutout that opens up automatically after, say, 8psi is a TERRIBLE idea. I'd much rather buy a $25 version of a part where even the higher-end models experience a high failure rate.

Well, since you have to replace stuff regularly anyway, why not get the cheaper one?

Downtime. Perhaps the cheaper ones fail at a rate that makes it uneconomical to purchase multiples vs. the expensive ones.

Well since you revealed now that you don't know for sure, then it's kind of a moot point now, isn't it?

I never bet for Ebay knockoffs.

And the point not rendered moot is that with the electrics failing so often cheap or expensive, go mechanical. Same job (I'd argue better, because the boost-controlled mechanical model is always ready to use), better reliability, low price. Love it.

My friend had a QTEC. But I feel you could make a pretty good setup off of summit racing.

Out of stock, of course...

If you're feeling up to fabrication you could build one out of a wastegate actuator and an F-250 exhaust warmup valve. I've seen that done.

yeah I was actually thinking I could probably rig something out of a spare wastegate actuator. I THINK I have one laying around.

Edit: At $285, that IS pricey, but still way less than a full exhaust system.

I remember someone rigging those up with a spare wastegate and a throttle body I think.

I'm REALLY thinking about getting one (two) of these on the BMW. Just for the sound really, the factory exhaust is probably the most non-restrictive oem exhaust I've ever seen.

I don't want it to be loud all the time. But when I want to hear my motor, I want hear it scream like a bat outta hell. :gapteeth:

Here's a decent brand I've been able to come across of. Reviews are good and price is decent too.

^Yeah I was looking at them about an hour ago! It came up off a normal google search. Theirs look different, but they have a 4 year warranty. I need to see how much room I have under the car to accommodate that massive actuator.

I've got two of them on the audi(one dumped out each side) and I've got them hooked up to a switch under the throttle pedal so when i'm merging onto the highway full throttle my car sounds beastly and when cruising by cops or coming home from work i can stay nice and quiet.

I couldn't find the thread again, but basically the throttle body pulley was removed, and an arm was welded in place of it.
So, when the wastegate arm extended, it swung open the throttle body.

I sort of wanted to get an exhaust cutoff.
I thought about modifying the Y pipe most kits come with and shorten or lengthen it to fit it where the catalyst would normally bolt onto.
Then label a button, "LOUD NOISES", and mount it somewhere.

Run a good, moderately toned exhaust with a screamer pipe on the wastegate.

Problem solved.

Nah, it would have to be bolt on for me. I dont like welding anything on exhaust because when it fails, you have to cut it out and that just causes more problems.

Oh, I'm going to weld the s*** out of it. Right to the down pipe...

Oatmealman- How quickly do the open? I was under the impression the electric ones took a few seconds.

I've never really sat and timed.Mine are run pre-cat so the second those things crack its loud as hell.It does take em a second or two to open up but my cars not fast either so it takes me a good couple of seconds to get onto the highway and be going the speed limit.
