i never said it would perform poorly, i just said it wouldnt perform at its peak

and i dont drive a Q actually, yes i do drive where performace really matters

the Q can take sweepers faster because of its longer wheelbase, same reason a miata would own you on an auto-x

and you dont want to just "slam" your car with coilovers, again this can actually hurt performance because you dont have enough suspension travel, you need to have enough ride height that the shock can travel as far as your car can push it without hitting the bump stops, normally itll have a 2 or 3 finger gap at this point

No, you're assuming that the coilover will have less suspension travel when lowered a lot, which is not true in every case. In my case you are correct, since I am running HKS coilvoers on my Q45, which don't allow for height adjustment independent of the spring preload adjustment. However, many new coilovers do (like the ones on my s14)

Also, I do agree that at an extreme lowered state the car isn't at the "best" handleing height, but then we are back to the can i really tell a difference driving down the highway or around town... no.

coilovers are overkill for handling on the street anyway, so no

if your car never sees a track, shocks and springs will suit it fine

I totally agree with you nismofly, I had coilovers on a car back around '99 and was a million times happier with a nice set of springs and shocks. I for one, wouldn't drive on coilovers without going to a speed shop and having the car corner weighted anyhow, but that's just my analness wanting it to be just right.

My car is somewhere between -2 and -3 degrees camber front and rear and with the sport springs and well matched sport shocks I have on it, I know it handles better than stock (which on the Y33 at least is an already impressive .89 according to Motor Trend or C&D). I for one, actually DO take my car and push it hard, I drive Mullholland (closest to me) and other various Southern California canyons with some regularity, and I have to say, it's a blast to drive a big car on the same roads I used to hit in a small, completely built up sports coupe.

As I've said before though, everyone has a different goal for their car, individual taste, etc. so what I might like, someone else might hate.

ive never done a canyon, but ive seen videos and they look a lot faster and open than the mountain passes and such that i normally tackle

as i said this sort of thing suits the Q well, being as long as it is, also i find the skidpad seems to fit some cars much better as well, according to the skidpad my stock s13 can corner better than an NSX

numbers racing is great but in the end it all comes down to lap times

i think something fun for you would be to go out and run a track day at willow springs, not sure if they do hpde's on the streets of willow or the actual road course, but if you can get on the course youll find it suits the Q great, its one of the fastest tracks in the west and almost every corner is fast

I'd love to go out to Willow! One day I will, there are regularly track days out there for about $150. The canyons are far from open though! At least all the ones I've ever been on, they're very tight and twisty, back and forth, rarely topping 80 mph before another 35 mph set of Esses. I rode from D.C. to Montreal on my old ZX6-r back in 1995 and the upstate N.Y. mountain roads were so smooth and fast, we calculated our average speed for the trip at about 110 mph (we were going to the 95 Canadian F1 GP). I bet those roads would be a real treat in the Q, mmmm, high speed sweepers.

Back on topic: Car looks good man! I love the fact that you still think you are not "flush." Thats how we do it. It looks awesome though! GREAT JOB!
Thanks man, I'll try and get some better pics with a better camera here shortly. A good friend of mine recently bought a 20D so i'll get him to break it in.

just some more food for thought for the sticklers for performance.... at about 3" down, the front LCA are pretty much about parallel to the ground at static ride height, which is what you'd want for *consistent* camber gain, and thus, consistent cornering feel... but, I'd be surprised if anyone can really discern the difference with the way they really drive their Qs. i barely could unless i'm really really paying attention, and driving over roads i'm intimately familiar with.
