Yes, I was "punished" growing up, and sometimes is was with anything my parents had close at hand. I guess the worst was either a hairbrush, or one of those wire hangers. Most of the time, I deserved everyting I got. But sometimes I was the recipient of my parent's venting.
I had a lot of respect for my parents, and stayed in line, for the most part, up until they divorced. I then lost respect for them. It took about 15 years for me to re-gain that respect. I had a lot of growing up to do. It's kinda funny, divorce steals the childhood from your children, and it takes them 3 times as long to mature.
If I had kids, today, I would definitely not "spare the rod" like some do. Punishment is necessary, just don't do it when you are angry - it can be misunderstood.
There is also a point, where punishment needs to turn to other things than whippings. Like taking away the cell phone, or internet connection, or even the Playstation.
